Starting up Saltwater! Woo!

I used one for over a year and it worked very well. The surface scum is not only unsightly it will also block light. There are a number of DIY surface skimmers you can hook up to your filter or you can just point your powerhead up at the surface but I found all that does is mix the scum into the water and make it cloudy. You can try it without one and see how it goes.

Okay thanks :) I might order one...

Here are some pics of the tank that i'm working with.. Yup, thats fine crushed coral. I put another layer after the pics because I thought it was to thin. Aragonite sand was wayyy to difficult to get and expensive. I would have had to order it on the net and pay $25 shipping and it just wasn't worth it. The LFS assured me this substrate would be perfectly fine for my setup and isn't an issue. (They use it on all of their displays) So I just agreed and got it.

very nice tank, looks like it will do very well. good luck with the CC!

Snazzy! I like the look of that tank a lot.

You're probably going to want to lose the glass top.

I would keep that CC bed on the thin side and VACUUM it good with every water change.

Get a little aragonite to mix in with the CC down the road if you can.

I really don't want to pay $80+ for it :( I was told this is pure fine CC and that is will be good... I dont think much will settle in it actually... it will be similar to sand.
