steelerfan's 30 Gallon Breeder Journal/Build

^^^ +1

I would love to have another scape to do. I have a tank but no more room at the moment.

Nice! Christmas in January.

yes it is!

2 questions greech.

1. i am hooking ro/di up now and want to soak my dry rock in that and vinegar for 2 weeks. how much vinegar per gallon of water?

2. i picked up the stuff 2 make my mesh top today and all lowes had was a dark brown metal piece for the top.

didn't know if thats what you had and painted it, or if you have the dark brown and left it?

thanks bud.

I honestly don't know how much vinegar to tell you to use. My dry rock went straight in the tank with just a hot water rinse. I would guess about a cup of vinegar for every few gallons though. You should not need much IMO.

My frame was white which I painted black. Couldn't find black frame at Lowes or HD which I thought was strange.

my rock still smells like ocean and i was reading that the soak can help with any phosphates and possibly cut down on bad algea problems. hmmm.

ok i will plan to krylon the frames.

thanks bud.

I can see how the vinegar would help with that and have read about others doing the same. Just rinse/soak it well after.

got the marine depot shipment in today, so i have all i need to get it going.

i am making my last 10 gallons of ro/di water now and will be mixing the salt into the brute tonight with powerhead.

i had a piece of plexiglass cut and kryloned it flat black but it looks horrible as the back of tank black strip was not exact, therefore the plexiglass left a gap and just looks cheap.

i will be bringing tank to a window tinting place tomorrow and putting the darkest tint available on it and then putting another plexiglas piece in back of that to hopefully prevent tint from getting scratched.

so if all goes as planned i can start filling tank tomorrow night.

Maybe I missed this but why aren't you just painting the back of the tank black? Krylon Fusion spray paint works great, very durable and dries in like 15 minutes. If you don't want to mask off the rest of the tank to prevent overspray, you can also roll on some paint.

hi greech,

it is very cold and windy where i am now and to attempt painting and getting 0 grit and pieces is not possible now.

even just painting the piece yesterday got some grit in it.

i will also be able to take tint off if i decide to where the paint would be a pain.

plus, i am able to scratch the krylon paint, so i would hate to do that and then scratch or chip back and have it look bad.
