steelerfan's 30 Gallon Breeder Journal/Build

readers digest version.

still no fish.

doing a tank and room blackout now to try to get rid of red planaria that i got from a detriove kit.

so after a super long lights out with heft bags around tank, flatworms were greatly reduced.

i just treated with flatworm exit at 3:45.

my mini brittle stars are not happy and at least 1 is dead.

waited to 430 and added another half dosage as i still see a few flatworms crawling around

2nd dose didn't appear to effect brittle stars.

going to let the product stay in there until 530 or so and add carbon and do 20% water change.

will do another 20% tomorrow and change out carbon and add real polyfilter as well.

Very happy to see you're still around! Don't forget to suck out as many of the FWs as you can when you do the WCs.

thanks guys,

greech, i did suck up some, but to be honest there really weren't that many of them.

i highly recomend the lights out to get the population way down.

hoping the exit product got the rest of them.

good news on my brittle stars did not die. they just looked a little distressed i guess because i had never seen them out before until the product was added, but they were good.

once i saw all appeared ok i let the product stay in there until 8 pm before doing the wc and adding carbo and polyfilter.

did this because i did see a couple still living after an hour, but watching you could see they did drop off and die.

wanted to give it a good long time so i hope i got all of them and won't have to treat again.

probably wouldn't recomend that if there were a lot of them, but again the lights out was great.

the downside i guess if you could call it that is i have zero algae in tank and i lost some snails probably to starving even though i did leave some algae on a clip every other day or so a lot of them didn't go to it.

i have been feeding tank daily still in hopes to build some bio filter for a fish.

also found my turbo snail on the floor a couple night ago while toppong off.

i put him back in as i didnt know how long he was out and he is fine :-)

also have been adding ammonia to my qt to keep cycled so i am going to monitor main tank for a few to make sure all is well and get qt tank a wc and attempt another fish run for the new year.

thanks for all the help from the board on possibly the slowest salt water hobbyist ever :-)

Sounds great! Good thinking on using the darkness to reduce the population before using the FW exit. Have a feeling this will be an awesome tank (one day ;)).

treated with a double dose tonight and the little buggers still remain.

gonna let run all night b4 adding carbon. mini bristle stars seem to be only thing agitated.

i remeber reading plainrt's thread a while back and he emptied tank and still found a few.

not sure what to do next?

let it run overnight which appears to have taken a toll on my mini brittle stars. a lot appear dead, but i do have a handfull appear to be ok.

my small snails all appear dead as well.

large snails, cleaner shrimp, porcelain crab and pods appaer ok and i don't see any flatworms.

added polyfilter and carbon.

will see what happens.

Good luck. I would definitely step off the treatments for now and manually siphon any strays. You can use a turkey baster to suck up individual FWs which will save you some water.

Sorry to hear about some of your CUC.
