Anyone ever used a stingray 10 filter? How strong is it and how good is it?

I need a filter for a 5 1/2 gallon planted nano. So i cant have alot of current, and small so i can hide it in a corner.

Any other types of filters that is out there that you guys can point out that fits my standards?

Thanks

I tried the stingray 10 for that exact reason of wanting light current. But let me tell you - the thing just sucks. My water was never anywhere near as clean as it should have been. The flow rate is so slow that I have been able to watch debris float right past it and not even get sucked in. And with every water change I vacuumed up twice as much mulm as an efficiently filtered tank should have.

Eventually I took the chance with a Whisper 10. At first I was concerned about the flow being too strong for the tank - as a betta lives in there - but my fears were entirely unfounded.

Not only is my tank beautifully clean, but Mr. Betta doesn't have the least bit of issue with the gentle current. Plus it's adjustable.

Usually my suggestions are loose and meant only as a guide - but with this I feel confidently sure that I am telling you exactly what your best choice will be.

i found the stingray very useless. it did an awesome job of filtering a very small amount of water for a frog tank, but for fishkeeping is pretty much not worth it.

Oh.

**** i have this filter, it came with the tank i got.

Can someone recommend me a small filter that is also quiet for my 35L tank please?

And also the new filter must be able to let me put my old filter media into it.

i recommend an Aquaclear HOB.. you can find the smaller ones for the smaller tanks. those little HOB's are awesome.

I have the Red Sea Nano filter on my 2.5. The current is a little strong for a 2.5, but deflected off some plants it doesn't bother my betta. It also has a flow control knob. I think it would be perfect for a 5.5. It's absolutely SILENT, a great filter.
It's done a beautiful job of keeping the water crystal clear and all the params in the right places.
It does need a little modification- it comes with a floss pad and a coarse sponge pad, but no carbon or anyting. I used an aquaclear carbon bag, dumped out half the carbon, and stuck it in there. Worked like a charm. Carbon in a nylon stocking would work great too.

I totally agree with using a Red Sea Nano filter. I have one in my betta tank and it works like a charm. Completely silent and the flow knob is adjustable which works great for the smaller aquariums especially those with bettas.:)

Yeah, i was looking at the red sea.

But for the price, i rather get the Tom's Mini Canister.

But i dont know anyone with one that have used it before.

I hate my stingray. It's in my 5g brackish crab tank. It doesn't do anything more than move water a little bit. If you're looking for a submersible, I'd go with a Duetto. They are strong, adjustible, and easy to clean. I have one in my turtle tank and it does a good job of cleaning up waste fast and efficiently. i'll be upgrading my crab tank to one of the smaller Duettos as soon as I can get one ordered.

I have the Red Sea on my 2.5g tanks. I love it.

Though for a 5.5 I would stay with the Whisper. The nano seems (to me) a bit small for that application.

The Whisper will increase your gph over the nano quite a bit, but will not create a strong current.

Also, the smallest Aquaclear is a bit too strong compared to the Whisper for a 5.5 unless you want a slightly strong current.
