Stocking 20 Long around Zebra Danios

If you're not sure about the panda corys you should look at oto's (otocinculus). They're smaller so you could probably stock more of them, and they're also very active though they won't confine themselves to the bottom of the tank.

Otos mainly eat algae and some vegetables and are very sensitive... imo they're not a good replacement for corys, but maybe it's just me since I look at corys like a requirement fish for community tanks. :D Also, the cories I've had are very active and swim around all over, they're pretty funny. If they keep hiding all day it's probably because their school is not large enough or they're stressed out by lack of hiding places/bully fish/ect...

I've been watching cory's in stores and on-line and they definitely look fun -- perfectly fit my "snorfelling" idea. Additionally, my aquarium has very low light and many low-light plants, so I don't *think* I'll have a big algae problem.

So, adding all that up I'm thinking I'll go with the 6 cory's. As soon as I'm cycled, I'll add those, see how things go, and then proceed with the rest of the stocking.

Looking forward to it!

It seems to me that you might be a little overstocked later on down the road. I work for Petco and there is no way I would recommend that many fish in such a small tank. If you look at it, the foot print of that tank is 30" x 12" x 12". There is going to be literally no distiniction between bottom middle and top feeders. It may seem like a lot of room at first, but if you have left out the fact that most fish are young when they are sold so they will grow quite a bit.

Zebra Danios = 2inches at adult size
Harlequin Rasbora = 2inches at adult size
Gourami = 1.5-2 inches at adult size
Pand Cory= 2inches at adult size

Even if you stayed with the 5, 5, 1, 3 quantities that you had originally planned I think you are still over. And if you went with the general dumb rule of 1 inch per gallon you would be sitting at 28 inches. I don't like using that rule so I would just like to point out that you are going to be overcrowded. I like the fish to be able to have room to observe the behaivors.

Oh and good job on the cycling. If you do add them all, dont add them all that the same time. do it over a few weeks as to not shock your system. good luck

I've read a lot of articles debating the soundness of the 1"/gal rule, but when I look at my tank and try to imagine schools of danios, rasboras, and corys with a DG it seems mighty crowded. So as of right now (changing by the second!) I think I'll add a shoal of corys and then either add the DG or just a few more danios.

Even if 1 DG + 5 ZD + 6 C is a reasonable bio load, I'm worried that the G and the ZD's will be constantly bothering each other (I'm picturing "Perfect Strangers" with 5 Balki's and 1 cousin Larry). So, hmmm...

Good news is that my tank seems well on the way to cycle-hood! Have been at 0.25-0.50 ammo for a few days now and have started showing ~0.10 nitrite.

Thanks all for the comments!

The inch per gallon rule is not even a guideline...it does not take many stocking factors into account. That being said I see no problems at all with the stock level. Tight, but doable.

I kept a DG with zebra danios, and it seemed rough on the DG at first but withplenty of reclusive places for the DG to feel secure, you should be fine.

Regarding veggies... I've found my Pleco won't touch them unless they've been in the tank at least 12 hours. Sometimes longer- and then all of a sudden I blink and they're gone.

Dunno how long you've tried leaving them in for with the Ottos- if you're taking them out after just 24 hours- you may try them an extra day.

It looks like pygmy corys are pretty rare at all my lfs. I found one with Julii corys though. The LFS guy said they get to be 2.5", but I found a site that says only 1.5". Anyone have any experience with these?

Also, I'm considering swapping a sparkling gourami for the dwarf. I also like the idea of adding 2 leopard danios for some variety and increased ruckus So I guess the new plan might be:

1 SG (would get a cave for him to relax in)
7 Danios
6 Julii Corys

Yes?

If the Juli Corys really stay at no more than 1.5" do it. If they get to 2.5" I think that might be pushing it, but doable.
