Stocking a 10g tank

4h post in a row

It would appear that I have a bacterial bloom in my 10g. Not nearly as bad as I have seen before in the 5g, but it is still annoying. Man, I thought that this was the best I had ever done in gravel vacing without disturbing other stuff and sending it up into the water. Guess not. I will do a water change tomorrow morning and then probably again at night. Then probably just one on sunday. Hopefully that will take care of it, if not I will do two on sunday.

Just curious, is this any sort of sign that the tank is getting close to the end of its cycle? Because if I recall correctly my 5g hit a couple bacterial blooms right around when we guessed that it was cycled. From the test, the ammo was low and it had pretty much been converted to nitrates. The last thing to do was just get the nitrates down by feeding less. Most of the time when I feed the fish in this tank it is every other day and I crush up 4-5 flakes, then run to catch the bus. And by the ammount of crap I suck up with each wc the guy at the store was probably right. I am feeding too much. for the fish I have he said just 2 maybe 3 flakes would be fine. So that is what I am going to go with. Then we will see next week.

Oh, I got so close to getting a testing kit. My mom asked the guy if there was any test we could get just for the nitrates. He showed us the api bottle for $12 and then the full api master test kit for $42 (and also mentioned that until we are done with the cycle, they are happy to do free testing). I told my mom that we should just do the free testing. Walked out the door and told my mom that petco has the api master test kit for $25. I think that after one more trip she will just give in and buy the test kit. (I have a whole $5 in cash, and my checking account is lower than I want it to be. I typically try to keep it above $200 and with all of my hobbies it is now at $100.)

i'm going to disagree with one thing. although, to cycle for the fish you currently have, you should only feed them what they need - to cycle for a higher bio-load, feeding for them while you're cycling with your "cycle fish" would be beneficial to your final stock by helping them avoid more or all of a mini-cycle.

So I should feed maybe 3-4 flakes every 2 days to increase the bio load? Well, it might take longer but it makes since. I should just get the test kit or at least the one for nitrates. Because I know that if I do this and go up to the lfs on friday and it isnt ready the guy is going to call me out on feeding too much, and the only benefit of going up there is me getting in 20-40 min of driving in.

The bloom seems to have filtered out over night, but I will still do wc today and tomorrow to be safe. Hopefully on friday it will be ready and I can make the final switches.

What should I do as far as layout of the tank. I just have it all kind of thrown in there right now. I think the starter fish look good with what I have. i think that with my guppies and neon tetras it might look kind of ugly and clash. I do have a 3 pack of the same 3 plants that are in there right now. I was planning on taking out the old plant from the 5g that has seen better days and replacing it with the 2 plants that are kind of grass like.
