I'm about to purchase a 20 gallon tank(got a pretty cool idea on how I'm gonna set it up) and I'm looking for some opinions on what would be good for a 20. I would like for it to be colorful but still have a variety(some things that stay on the bottom, some that swim around, etc.)

20 gallon high or long?

i would stock it with platys (any variaty or color) just make sure you have 1 male fore every 2 females. Then you could get some corys for the bottom. Knowing high or long could help me give you a more definitive stocking list.

5 coridoras, 8 neon tetras, 1 male fancy guppy, 2 female fancy guppies, 1 mystery snail

 20 gallon tank............

you could easily get 8 pygmy corydoras, a small schooler school (danios, glo-fish(glofish are colored danios) rasboras, ember tetras, endler live bearers. And then a pair of Gardneri Killifish.

20 longs are great for corydoras or kuhli loaches!

Top:
Honey Gourami (2F, 1M)

Middle:
Endler's Livebearers (lots-these guys are tiny but colorful! 2F for every 1M)
OR
Harlequin Rasboras (6-8)
OR
Cherry Barbs (6, 2F for every 1M)

Bottom:
8-10 kuhli loaches
OR
6-8 corydoras (bronze/peppered/albino,panda)

If you like smaller fish... habrosus or hastatus corydoras max out just under 1" and you could have about 14-16 in there!

Edit: Also, your bottom dwellers would appreciate a sand substrate, but as long as your gravel doesn't have sharp edges it should be fine. Gourami need some floating plants (real or fake).

Alright, thanks! I'll definately look into those. Also, will the pet store be able to tell if the fish are male or female, or should I try to get them from somewhere else?(This particular pet store has misinformed me on many occasions)

if you don't feel comfortable at one lfs trust your gut and check out the other options. Also you could research the differences in gender in the fish you want so you have some basic knowledge going in.

Find the kind of fish you like on the internet and read up on them. When you buy them you will be prepared for the employees sales pitch. You will prob. know more about the fish than the employee does. Do a search here on AC on different fish that you like. there are many knowledgeable people on AC. Even do a 20 gal stocking search.

Alright, I've been doing some research on the fish suggested. I should be able to determine which are male and female for a few. I guess I'll have to take the employees word for what I can't determine on my own.
