Stocking a 90 Gallon

If you're doing a non-planted tank, silver dollars maybe?
If planted, maybe a larger SA tetra like black skirts?
Severum?
Hatchet fish?
Congo tetras, if you're ok mixing continents....

just some ideas. Good luck!

Sorry don't know fish from the area. Ummm try PMing Japes on monsterfishkeepers.com cuz he had a OH biotype tank.

For anyone interested, the very helpful MFK members recommended the following:

From the Rio Tapajo:

Apistogramma agassizii
Laetacara curviceps
Laetacara dorsigera
Dicrossus maculatus
Corydoras ornatus
Hyphessobrycon heliacus
Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis
Nannostomus marginatus
Peckoltia sp. "L134"

Not specific to the Rio Tapajo, but kept compatibly:

Hemigrammus rhodostomus
Nannostomus Beckfordi
Thayeria boehlkei
Cichlasoma octofasciatum
Heros Severus

Severums would be nice tank mates for geos and suitable as they swim higher.

If you want the prettiest geo, IMHO, go with the altifrons geophagus.

My advice would be to stick to a one cichlid tank. The Geos you've ( the OP ) mentioned would look great by themselves and if you're planning on keeping a group you won't have much room left for other fish. You could add a large schooling fish; there are many to choose from in that region. Tetras come to mind immediately. With the Geos I'd also recommend a dark sand substrate to really set off their colors.
What are your water parameters out of the tap? Hard/ Soft? pH? This should be a deciding factor. If it's hard stick to Central Americans or Africans. If it's soft look into South Americans. This is generalized and there are exceptions from every locale.
One more thing to consider: Do you want plants? If you do you should steer away from Geophagus sp ( note the common name Eartheaters ). This is why many people will recommend Discus or Angels as they are plant friendly.
Another possibility with plants would be several groups of dwarf cichlids ( Rams, Apistogramma sp. ), with a large school of neons ( 30-40 would look nice ). In this setup you could include corydoras, loaches, and smaller plecos.

Thanks Jakezori and AfroCichlid! I'll have to read up on the Altifrons and see what I think.

In answer to your question about water, my tap water has a pH of about 6.8 and has zero hardness (it's essentially rain water). I know a lot of people in my area keep discus because we have great water for it (some places nearby the tap water comes out as low 5.5 pH). Unfortunately Angels and Discus aren't quite what I'm looking for right now.

I appreciate the suggestion about the dwarf cichlids, I think that would actually be a really attractive setup. I really wanted to go with something larger for the fish since I have the space (90 is the largest tank I've had), so I don't think that's the direction I'll go right now.

I'm pretty sure I'll go with 4 - 5 geos, a school of tetras (or maybe pencilfish), and possibly a catfish of some sort.

I would shy away from altifrons cuz they are going to get too big for your tank. Btw I'm jealous of your water parameters, I have super hard water and the pH is around 8

Yeah, I just read up on the Altifrons, and they're beautiful, but they'll get too large.

Hahaha, well...the water parameters are a mixed blessing. I was originally thinking about keeping Africans, but decided I don't feel like having to mess with my water chemistry that much.
