I am having a horrible time deciding on what to replace my OB zebras with. So I figured I would get some more advice from this wonderful forum.

Here are the specs on the tank:

55 gallon with a eheim 2028 and cascade 1000 filters running. Black sand, black background, rounded granite boulders and a couple pieces of texas holey rock. I have a 48" light stripe with a 50/50 bulb. The rocks are split into 3 groups. One pile on each side of the tank with the holey rock in the middle along with a few plastic plants. I can post pictures if needed. The tank is very dark to bring out the colors of the fish. This stocking choice needs to be bright and pop in this dark tank.

Stocking:

Cyno. white top haras: These guys have blue'grey females and the male is a white blue with a few black stripes. He doesn't always show his stripes but is usually a nice blue color. The haras bicker with one another but generally leave the other fish alone. These guys range from 2" -3" right now and are reproducing like rabbits. I have no idea how many I have.

Ps. Acei: I have 4 right now. 1male and 3 females. These fish don't bother anyone but seem to be chased by everyone. They get along great with the other fish and don't seem to mind being chased away. Most of the acei are well over 4" now.

Ps. Demasoni: I have one adult male demasoni. I think I lucked out with him. Yes he is aggressive but all he does is chase. He can be a punk but never stresses fish out or harms them. He's been in the tank for over a year and has done very well. He owns the place and only really seems to hate the OB zebras. I love this guy and would hate to see him go.

OB zebras: This is the group I am replacing. My dominant male has gone crazy and has killed one of his females. They are constantly fighting with each other and causing damage to other OB zebras and tankmates. They are the only group that does not play well with others. So they are getting booted and being replaced by one of the following species.

Here we go:

First up is Metriaclima sp. ''msobo' :

Pros: Nice fish that has blue stripeless males with yellow females. Shouldn't cross breed with my other fish.

Cons: I might be dealing with another aggression case. I don't want fish that are going to kill each other. I would have to order offline which is pricey.

Second option:

Melanochromis Johanni :

Pros: This fish has horizontal stripes so my cyno and demasoni shouldn't get too upset about it. Nice yellow females for contrast.

Cons: I was told when i first started this tank to avoid anything in the Melanochromis genus. Would I be dealing with psycho killers? Also I would have to order offline which means more $$$.

Third option:

Pseudotropheus Saulosi:

Pros: Stays small and that would be good for a 55 gallon. Males are nice looking and so are the females. I could also get these locally and they seem to be well mannered.

Cons: The addition of these would mean my demasoni would have to go and there could be problems with my white top hara. Too many vertical striped fish. I would have to watch the situation carefully and could have some compatibility problems.

Fourth option:

Pseudotropheus socolofi (albino)

Pro: Nice solid white fish that will contrats great with my decore. My demasoni could stay and no stripes in sight for anyone to get mad about. These guys seem middle road as far as aggression goes and I think they would play nicely.

Cons: I don't think I could get them locally so I would have to order offline, $$$. They seem to get bigger than my other options.

Final choice:

Labidochromis caeruleus

Pros: I know this species will work in my tank. They are not very aggressive and look nice as well. Easy to get.

Cons: This is my least favorite option. Labs are so common and it can be difficult to get a nice strain. This is really a last option for me.

Other: I am open to any other suggestions.

I have to say my msobo are a beautiful yellow color and I have had not issues with aggressiveness. I got snow whites aka albino socolofi, and the aggressiveness from them is crazy. they are in a different tank with 2 males(chewere and mbamba) and they more than hold their own. the male albino has taken over 1/3 of the tank and nobody goes near his caves.

I say either the johanni or msobo. I have heard the same about johanni, its hit or miss... if you get saulosi, u have to get rid of the dem. the males are not as pretty as the dem and the females show some striping at times. yellow lab would be nice as well if you can find a nice strain

I will be making a thread like this myself very soon as I am ready to replace my mainganos & may have an option to get some Labidochromis sp. Mbamba or Metriaclima callainos but am unsure of compatibility in my tank! :)

I LOVE my albino socolofi. The male is gorgeous! BUT he owns 1/2 the tank. He stays in his cave till he sees someone come near and he chases them as far away as possible but that is about it, no REAL harassing or fighting.

My male maingano is the exact same thing on the other 1/2 of the tank & just as gorgeous! Mainganos are less aggressive then Johannis and look darn near identical.

I have not owned Msobo or Saulosi but they both continually get mixed reviews of aggression. Both species also are usually recommended in species only setups, where I think they make great displays!

Honestly if you are looking for a less aggressive option to red zebra OBs I'd go for the yellow labs, easily. They are the least aggressive on your list without a doubt. Just find a good solid strain and these guys are stunning with the yellow and black contrast.

If you decide on albino socolofi or mainganos (instead of Johanni) I have juvis (socolofi) & fry (mainganos) that I will be selling (cheap) in the near future.

Thanks for the advice so far.

I had to put in a vote for my husband. He likes to socolfi :)

I know the labs are most likely the "best" option but I just don't really care for them lol. So I'm hoping something else may work out of this list.

I voted Albino Soco's my second would be the Msobo, from what i have read and experienced the Albino's are less aggressive for some reason or another but yeah i would most def get rid of the Zebra's which in my opinion Zebra's belong in a species tank mean little boogers..

Blue, my two favorites would be the albino socolofi and the yellow lab; because IMO you have enough blue fishes already and these 2 will create a nice contrast. I voted for the labs only because in my experience, they are much hardier than the snow white socolofis.

Thanks for the input.

First let me say that as far as aggression goes I don't mind chasing and the ocational fin nipping (I mean I own a demasoni). I consider these behaviors normal. I just don't want any fishy assassins or psychopaths.

While my acei are mild mannered, my cynos can take care of themselves and my demasoni doesn't back down to anyone. I think my tank could handle a mid range agressive species without much problem.

Did you think about rusties ? I think you've got lots of blue in there and might be worth trying these guys - they stay small and have relatively (for mbuna) aggression levels - your tank has a nice even look to it as regards aggression (on paper) and a group might do nicely. They won't interbreed with your other fish. Their colours are fantastic when settled into a nice set-up.

Otherwise I might plump for the Albino Socolofi - they are really beautiful fish imo - and again give you something other than blue.

Yeah I know I need less blue, but it is my favorite color :)

I have been recommended rusties many times and I just don't find them very attractive. My local lfs started carrying them and they do look better in person than I thought but still not the look I was going for.

Fair 'nuff :)

They never really look their best in the LFS mind.

I'd probably go for the Albino socolofi instead from your list.

Another one to look at is Pseudotropheus Aurora...beautiful fish if you can get 'em...not sure if that's an up to date classification but if you google that you'll see what I'm on about.
