stocking idea for a 15 gallon..please comment!!

Too many platies, keep in mind they can reach 2.5"
another thing to keep in mind, platies are livebearers. So a school of 3 may double/triple in time.

to be honest, cory cats are the main reason i want a tank. what if i go with the following:
1 honey gourami
6 sunburst platies
4 panda cories...

if i cut the sunburst down to 3, is there any other type of fish or something i can throw in there and it will still be alright

You could have another honey or 2, as long as you can make sure you get 2 females or 1 male 2 females in the end, just to make them happy (males may become a little agressive with only 1 female, too).

i like that idea... i think i will have 3 platies and two honeys along with the cories incase the platies have babies it wont be overstocked.

Also, you can sex the platies to make sure you don't get any females, which are almost always pregnant. Check right behind the stomach, in between the stomach and the tail fin. If there are 2 small fins and 2 very small fins, it's a female. If there is a white, stick-like "protrusion" and no fins, it is a male. This "protrusion" is called a gonopodium, and is found on most livebearers (Guppies, platies, swordtails, and mollies for the most part).

what would be another good fish that could go with cories and a couple of honey gouramis?

Assuming you aren't including the platies in this one, a school of 6 glowlight tetras, neons, cardinals, lemons, rummies, white clouds, or cherry barbs (2 males 4 females) would work.
