I LOVE platys and but have to tell you- they poop a LOT! I have 4 in my 30 gallon, (plus a new baby one!) and 4 mollys and that is more than plenty!
3 dwarf gouramis, and 3 bumble bee gobies in addition make it an overstocked tank- but I have a 70 gallon power filter on there and have time to test the water frequently and make sure the parameters are great.
I am thinking you could do it- but it will be a lot of work to keep the water clean!
and get a bigger than normal filter-
