Stocking suggestions?

I had a small cowfish in my 29 gallon for over a year (see avatar, that was mine) until the FOWLR got old to me and I wanted to get into corals. The are definately a fragile fish IMO. They are like little blimps floating around your tank.

I had a lionfish as well but unfortunately it wouldn't eat and I was way to afraid to try and feed it by hand so it didn't make it. No more venomous fish for me (even though I currently have a very odd tiny scorpion fish now that I can not find out what it is).

Personally, porcupine puffers have always been my favorite. First one had for 2 years in a 29 gallon and he never outgrew it. Happy as can be, would eat goldfish out of my hand, and the best personality out of any fish I have owned. I tried again with a puffer after I moved and got back into tanks but that one out grew the tank in less than 6 months so I had to take it back to the store. I have heard some people say fish will only grow to the size of your tank, and the first puffer seemed to follow that, but not the second puffer.

Hawkfish have always been another favorite of mine to watch at the stores but I have never bought one personally.

Although I agree Porcupines are great fish, its hard to believe one lasted 2 years in a 29 gallon tank. These fish grow to about a foot and a half, and its hard to believe its growth was stunted so much. Probably because you fed it goldfish.... Im guessing it died at the 2 year mark? Not trying to be mean but I wouldn't do this.

Nope, he did not die. He was as happy as can be.. always swam upto the top to greet me.. and actually let me pet him (one direction of course)quite often. I was told that 3 years after I returned him and someone else bought him he was still alive and kicking in a 120gallon tank and the new owners loved him as well. I am not lying when I say that he didn't outgrow the tank.. really, he did not grow much at all from the day I bought him. I was a noob at saltwater then and did not know much about fish vs tank sizes and liked the personallity of the fish. If someone where to ask me today about putting a porcupine puffer in a 29g it was be an immediate NO. Not sure if the goldfish stunted his growth, at the time that was what I was told I needed to feed him..

That was not the case at all on my second attempt at a puffer. He was the same size as my first one when I bought it but within 6 months outgrew the tank and had to return him. I fed him marine food though, not goldfish, so that may be the answer.

Here is a pic of my second puffer I had to return.
