Strange Behavior

Dont worry, you guys havent scared me away...starting is always the toughest part as there is so much to learn. I moved the gourami into her own tank but i think i will take her back. The reason I bought her is b/c the male gourami was picking on the female and I wanted to spread the aggression around. I took 2 mollies back to the fish store just now so thats two less fish in the tank and the other 2 should be ready to go back in about a week. In my research about the zig zag eel and from what the LFS told me, they only get to be about 7 inches long, even smaller then the peacock eels.

As for the tank...I've had the tank for 3 months now, I learned about cycling from this website, theres alot of great information here. I used BioSpira and have been adding fish slowly. It has a fair number of plants in it and the problem with the ammonia is only recent as of this week.

I guess I just need to admit that Ive maxed out my bioload and its time to get another tank.

As for my gourami, she was originally swimming fine and when I was watching the tank last night she was doing fine as well. So far she looks fine, no buldging eyes, no bloating, no funny spots. I will continue to keep an eye on her. Thanks for all your input and advice and I will definatly check out those stickies.

hahhahahaaa

NOW your an aquarist. :)

good to hear the gourami is doing better.

Oops.......don't know if I came off as bullying or not. More like honest advice. She's new, her tank is overstocked, and she's looking to unload a few fish from it. As long as she's willing to return a few fish, why not advise her to return a few more to bring it down to acceptable levels?

And, the zig zag eel...............7 inches?

I searched it because I'd like a freshwater eel for my 55 at some point in the future and I was pretty amazed at how big the vast majority of the hits on a google search said they'd get:

You may want to take a look at this:
http://www.fishbase.org/summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=10140

Just so you don't have to convert it on your own, 90 centimeters = 35 inches. (Don't mean that in an arrogant way......I'm really just trying to save you some work since the info is provided in centimeters).

Or you can check this out for a visual:

I don't know what yours looks like. It may be another species going by the name "Zig Zag" or it could have been mis-labeled by the LFS. But, if it resembles any of the photos from the first link, it's possible that your LFS gave you bad advice. Just something to look at.

Oh, and yes.......in case you were wondering........if you ever get hungry you could eat your eel when it gets bigger. Apparently, they're a popular food item.
:soda:

Ghostshrimp, thanks for the advisory on the zig-zag eel....mine doesnt look like any of those, it has very different markings. Here is a link I found on zig-zags.

But even if the eel does get to be 3 feet I think I will keep him and get him a bigger tank as he grows because he is such a cool fish with such a neat personality. Thanks for the heads up though

Ok an update on the gourami. She's in a hospital tank and she has had some developments. Some of her scales look white and as though they are about to fall off in patches. This is happening along the top front half if her body, no where else. Any ideas on what it might be and is this something I can treat and if so what is a good medicine to use. Should I also treat the main tank as well?
Sorry I dont have a camera so I cant get any pictures.
