strange happenings with your tanks

I had a 10 gallon tank with a few zebra danios in it once ... danios being rather determined egg eaters, I obviously never had any fry show up. I ended up transferring the danios to another tank, and the 10 gallon just ... sat. No power, no heat, nothing. Algae started growing on the sides, and I let it go.

One day, walking past the tank I saw something move. Cool! thought I. Maybe it's a copepod or something.

Nope, it was a zebra danio fry. And I found 8 more. I figure they had been missed by the voracious parents, and I ended up raising them in the algae tank with tiny water changes, and eventually when they got large enough to net, moved them to a larger tank.

Very pretty ramshorns.

I'm cycling a small tank right now and there is a massive amount of bio waste in it. The only think alive in there are 2 mini samhorns. I think it's coming from the driftwood.

That is one thing I have always wondered if drift wood can throw off your tank when it is introduced. Any thoughts on this from anyone.

i think it depends on the type of wood and if it is actually driftwood or just a peice of wood hasn't been preserved naturally underwater. soft woods aren't good. also, if it's not really driftwood it could be decomposing in the tank and making a mess.

personally I would not put anything other than the type of wood you get that is specifically meant for aquaria ie/ african, malaysian etc....

what I wonder is if a piece of wood was previously used and abused would that wood release nastiness when taken out of dry dock as it were? does aquarium driftwood have the ability to store nastiness only to release it when rehydrated much the same as when corals die and dry on live rock and then rehydrate when reused?

I had a plastic hex 3gallon thing that I threw plant sheddings into, mostly leaves and the random strands of moss. It only had 3inches of water max with some gravel at the bottom. Anyhow had the thing sitting for at least a couple months with no water change or filtration just floating plants and what not. Well I was about to pour the thing outside when I looked and saw fully grown shrimp in there. It was almost a mini colony. I guess some tiny shrimp were in the moss and they all grew up, even had a some berried cherry shrimp. I finnally scooped them out and emptied the container last wk.

anyhow how your fry looks like some kinda tetra to me. congrats anyhow!

thats cool find shrimp colony love it

they look alot like my angel free swimmers. But fish babies are new to me so i cant give you much help. goodluck with them!
