Oh..Maybe try a sponge filter. My babies don't get sucked up only because I keep some just with a divider in my big tank with the adults...except tehy are divided so the adults can't get to them but they have the same water conditions even though there is no filter on their side...I find that to work best for me. You can get the dividers cheap at petsmart and they work great!

I should have clarified that the prefilter is a sponge filter. It just didn't cover the intake completely (there was a teeny tiny space that the fry could get into), so I corrected it and there's no more problems with losing fry that way. I've got a 10 gallon strictly for fry, so the adults can't get to them unless they jump across the room.
