Students Kept Under Surveillance

I don't think that it is much different than the GPS tracking systems that people have in their cars. I know that the GM OnStar system has a GPS tracking system. I know that many people like it, and don't have a problem with a 3rd party knowing where they are at, what direction they are heading, and that the 3rd party has control over their cars engine/features(to an extent). Many people consider these systems a "saftey feature", and are willing to pay every month for it! It is really no different, except that it is your child that is being tracked, and not your car. I would guess that the technology would be embraced if it were to prevent a crime. Why would you be so afraid of school administrators knowing where you are at(on the school campus), unless, you are not where you are supposed to be?

School is NOT free! I pay for it, as does every other tax payer, and soooooo many people think that school is a waste of time, and don't attend classes, and then later in life, my tax dollers are wasted again to pay for them! If this system would reduce tax money waste, then so be it!

The moral of this post?
Work Harder! Millions of People on Welfare Depend on You!

This topic reminds me of when some get put on "house arrest" and have to wear an electronic "shackle" of sorts, on their ankle..

I tend to be a bit paranoid about Orwellian trends but I'm not that alarmed by this.

The school is responsible for a students' safety and well being while they are in school. It stands to reason that they should be able to take steps to insure that they at least know where the students are during school hours. As I understand the system from the article these are NOT GPS transmitters that anounce the child presence to some satellite. They are radio tags that have a limited signal. It seems they would only alert the system to the childs whereabouts within the school grounds. What's so wrong about that?

If you work for a larger corporation you probably have an id tag that lets you in and out of the building with a scan. That system is most certainly capable of keeping track of you at work.

When you're at school your butt belongs to the school because they are responsible for you. You play by the rules or you don't go. This isn't an invasion of privacy YOU DON"T HAVE PRIVACY AT SCHOOL! The only acception to that would be the obvious such as bathrooms/changing rooms. Otherwise, while you're in school you're subject to their rules.

Thinking more on this....

I'm glad when I was at school I was not electronically tracked - and there was no need to do it.

I'm also glad "tasers" were not in use either.

I'm glad that my school didn't have the need for drug dogs at the door, and metal detectors there too. We need control over things, as they are getting out of hand. IMO, most of the kids thinking that they can do what they want, when they want is what is bringing this kind of control on.

If you keep the kind of fish that might jump out of your tank resulting in an untimely death, shouldn't you keep a lid on the tank? I agree that the sensors shouldn't be on the bathrooms, but since they are only short range I think they're a great idea for classroom use. It's not like they can be used to see where you are after school hours. Besides, the same parent who objected would also be thankful if it prevented a kidnapping, or a runaway, or their child going off campus to buy drugs. After all, what could you possibly be doing AT SCHOOL besides schoolwork that wouldn't be a bad issue anyway.

You know, as a parent and the husband of a teacher, I don't have a problem with this. How is it an invasion of privacy? You're at school for goodness sake, what is so private about that? So, somene can see if you're in the bathroom, is that a big deal? If you're in a classroom, you walk out of it in front of 20 or so other people who know where you're going!

Actually, I think this is a great idea. In theory it would keep kids from cutting class or leaving the campus. Only problem I see with it is it would be super easy to fool. "Hey, Joe, I'm cutting English to drive over to my girlfriend's house, take my tag." Still, you could still take attendence manually and avoid situations like that. Maybe I see things differently because I went to a High School campus that was laid out like a small college. It was literally sprawling and some buildings were a half mile apart and you had to dodge 2999 other students to get to class. I see the badge tracking system as a miracle at a campaus like that.

Why not just rely on cameras. Surveillance cameras are very common.

Who would welcome the idea of being tracked like some fish in the ocean, or a manatee - or some other animal. The principal idea of this disgusts me. We are not zoo animals.

Sence when is public school a money making business. its not suposed to make money. if a child dosnt go to school its there own fault that they are not getting an education. they dont need to be tracked like endangered animals.

Just my personal opinion
