stupid question (filter/cloudy water)

im running a 55 gal acrillic aquarium with 3 fish in it (2 oscars, and a plecos) it has a AQUA Tech 30-60 filter... its supposed to have the ez change #3 filters in it but petsmart didnt have those, so i got penguin rite size C filters... looked just like the one that came with the filter (((i got this set up used)))

ive had the tank set up maybe a week, i let it sit for 2 days before i put the fish in it... water started to get cloudy, i figured maybe i didnt get the rocks and everything clean enough when i cleaned it all before i put water in it, and i fed the oscars live feeder fish (rosey comets) so i changed most of the water yesterday... the water is a little cloudy today... im using auqasafe to condition the water....

and here comes the (really) stupid question- is there supposed to be more than the 2 filter cartriges in the filter?

im trying to figure out why the water so cloudy so soon...? is it because i dont have the correct filters in it? :help:

Read the sticky on cycling a tank.
Buy a test kit.
That tank is way too small for those fish. 1 Oscar in a 55 is not bad but 2 let alone a pleco. Those fish can all ground to over 14" in length.
If I were you i'd take the fish back and properly cycle the tank and then purchase some fish that would be comfortable in a 55g.
 
thanks for the input- i plan on getting a larger tank shortly... i got the fish as a gift from a friend who had these 3 fish in a 10 gallon- they didnt think the oscars got that big...

im debating on digging up my big canister filter to put in this tank... i know it works correctly, i had it on my little outside pond
 
I would Definately go that route. What kind of canister is it?

the good news, is if you get a tank big enough for two oscars to actually have swimming room, it sould be big enough for a common pleco, too! Do you know what kind of pleco it is?
 
Then, if you get the 150 that would prolly be big enough for those three fish, your filtration should still almost be adequate! lol
 
Your tank is cloudy because you just set it up and it is trying to establish itself. This is normal & will clear up in a few days. That is the good news.

The bad news is that your tank doesn't yet have the necessary beneficial bacteria to handle your fish. If you don't pay very close attention to all of your water readings (buy a test kit asap) and do the necessary water changes, your fish probably won't survive.
