i just set up a 75 with soilmaster select... a little apprehensive about how that will work out because the stuff is so **** light its not even funny. Im sure my future clown loaches will love it though once the tank gets cycled.

If it's black and great for plants, it's most likely eco-complete.
eco complete is not little balls... theyre in more of sand form than balls
i think hes referring to aquasoil-ish things.
ADA is not the only company that makes those little dirt balls

I have white gravel in my tank, i like the fact that gravel keeps the rocks in my tank stable, but i worry that it may not be good enough for my zigzag eel. i have the eel in there with 5 cichlids 1 monoargentinus, and 1 burma cat.

hmm, I've never used anything but gravel so I'm not really in a position to say that anything is better or worse.

however, after reading these posts and some other sites, I'm definitly going to try a florite base with a sand and some florite mix on top. I'll have to see how it works out. I'll probobly try it in a smaller tank first and if it works well for me I'll probobly move it up to a larger tank.

(this from a person already planning tanks that they won't have for years. When you are going to university and have to move back and forth every spring and fall, it's not easy having one small tank, let alone a large one -lol I'm restricting myself to just one tank for now...though I always get the erge for another)

I've had pretty good luck with Turface recently. Last time I got some, they were out of the brown so I tried a few bags of the grey. If you tend to like black gravel, it's great- and makes an even better background than stark black.

It is pretty light, especially when it's new and hasn't soaked up the water. OTOH, you get a LOT in a 50-lb bag! You could easily set up 2 or 3 55g tanks for $8. If you're planting val you might have to re-plant a few before the roots get established. When you're first washing it, better get a fiberglass screen to help with the washing and draining, or you'll be at it all day!

I'd try sand if I could get a darker brown, as I tend not to like the light white or pale yellow color.

Ghost, two years so far, filters still work as well as I'd want them too, plants still rooted good, have only lost two fish in that time that lasted out the first week or so (I was late to figuring out a good acclimation process), no problem with detritus on the sand.

That's actually kind of wierd... my fish poop, but it never seems to land on anything except one rock that has a beard of hair algea on it. I don't even vaccum anymore (for about nine months now) and the sand looks nice.

Of course, some people on here have had serious long term issues, so look into that first, but I'm quite happy (and I spend a lot less time cleaning it then I ever have a gravel based tank lol)

i use sand and MTS. i like the look of sand and all my tanks are planted, the plants like it better than gravel.
