Hello everyone,
This is my first post here and I am looking for some suggestions on a micro fish tank for the office. It has been setup for a year now and the previous inhabitants have died off slowly. This was due to a combination of power outages and possible parasite issues.

I am sure the tank is clean now and I am looking for some good ideas on what fish to put in there. It sits on my desk and people are always walking by so the fish would probably need to be tollerant of that. Otherwise I am open to suggestions for freshwater fish, not ready for salt just yet.

As I stated in title it's a 2.5 gallon MiniBow with a couple small plants in it and an Elite Micro filter. The filter is pretty strong even with the venturi pointed at the corner and set as low as possible.

Thanks Much.

If you could get a little heater for it, I would go with a betta. But they need warmer temps..around 80* so a heater really would be needed.

Is that Elite Micro filter the little black rectangular submersible one by Hagen that sticks to the glass with suction cups?

If it's the one I'm thinking of, you may want to be careful putting a betta in the tank with it-- I used to have one in my betta's first tank (a 1.5 gal), and his fins kept getting caught in the intake thingie while he was sleeping/being stupid and not paying attention to where he was swimming. His tail got torn to shreds on a near weekly basis, the poor thing! Fortunately, it never really seemed to bother him at all, but his fins aren't as pretty as they used to be, and certainly don't grow anywhere near as long as they should. And yeah, in addition to the filter's insatiable appetite for betta fin, its output created a surprisingly strong current my betta didn't seem to enjoy much. I think if you do opt for a betta, I'd consider using a sponge filter or something instead.

least killies - they can be hard to find, but someone here (tricksterpup?) knows all about them and recommends them highly for small tanks. I know they stay very small, males only reach a quarter inch or so. Do some googling....

I'd love to be able to find some of those little fish locally. I don't know how well "shipping" a fish will go, but then again aren't they all for the most part.

Does anyone have any experience with that filter, I just don't want it to be too fast for new residents. it is not the original filter from the tank so it's new to me. I was thinking about mounting it upside down and putting it near the bottom, that way the intake would be on top and outlet near the gravel to flush out crud and keep it aerated.

Endlers, Lesser killies, Gertrudes rainbow fish, Peacock gudgeon, Goo-obo gudgeon, Pigmy Dwarf Rasbora, cherry shrimp and if you want to go brackish Bumble bee gobies will all work in smaller tanks provided you keep up with the tank changes and maintain good water. Some are harder to find than others, so if you are really interested in one of these fish you can try on-line or auqabid for purchases. I'd love to see a picture of your tank. Good luck, I love nanos! Mine is listed on my member’s page below.

I suggest you rescue a lonely and sad little betta from the endless supply of deli cups found at your local Walmart, Petco, Petsmart, whatever. I'm not kidding. Just walk in there and look for the most active and responsive fish you can. These fish are very curious and interesting fish that will provide years of enjoyment with proper care.

Then, look for the Red Sea Nano filter. This thing filters up to three gallons with a flow of 15g/hr. This means your 2.5 will have a very healthy envronment for the betta. Also, try to find a small 25W heater as well as an external thermometer to monitor and maintain the tank's temp.

Good luck.
