I know I may be swimming up the wrong creek here, but I was wondering if anyone has any sugggestions for a 10G tank.

I am very knowledgable in keeping cichlids and know all about the tank parameters and water quality and the like. I have a 10 gallon tank in my home office that I would like to put something in.
I want something in the Cichlid family that would be happy in such a small tank and wouldn't get too big. Even a discus or something is fine. I am more than willing to do routine maintenance but I would just like something colorful and/or something with a good personality.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Is your water hard or soft? If soft, I'd look into apistos, but if hard I'd go the shell dweller route (unless you like to mess with water chemistry!).

A 10 gallon with a pair of Neolamprologus brevis or a trio or quartet of N. multifasciatus makes for a nice, low mainetance tank.

The links above are good, but go for the articles in Cichlid-forum - they're more factual than the cichlidrecipe site (which does have some good info, but their suggested stocking levels are way too high).

Thanks guys for all the advise. I never knew the dwarf cichlids existed. What a wonderful new branch of the hobby.
I think I am going for no more than 3 of some of the smallest shell dwellers multifasciatus. I've got the LFS looking into their supplies for me...it seems even HE wasn't that familiar with them. I think, if all else fails, we will both buy some from an online supplier.
Thanks again.

apistos are the best, IMO

can you tell me more about those fish? (shell dwellers) i am interested in getting some for my 10 gallon. i am prepared to get sand, if needed. do they have any special water requirements? or the same as the zebra danios and platys i have in there now (which will be removed upon purchase of the shell dwellers) do you have any advice on where to purchase these fish? thanks for any info!
