i had a maculatus in my old 10 gallon before i had a malfuntion with the HOB fuge and 10 gallons of water was on my dorm room floor.... He didnt make it 
But with a large skimmer, it could work. I say large skimmer because they eat a LOT. a pictus species might be a better choice
