You right, it's 1 1/14" thick. I would like to use it thick like that. It's that OK or it's too thick?

I tried it both ways and I found that for my Magnum filters it was too thick to fit so I split them and I found out that they worked just about as well. I also tried it on my FX5 full thickness becasue I had room, but when I went to clean the filter I found out that the dirt only penetrated 1/3 of the way into the polyester batten. So now I split them for my FX5 as well.
But try it both ways so you can get a feel for which way works best for your filter. If you do decide to split them, start at one corner and work your way around all the perimeter sides splitting a little at a time until you reach the middle and it splits perfectly in half (about 1 minute). Only split pieces that are cut to size this way you have a custom ready filter replacement for your next cleaning. Remember fuzzy side out!

yup walmart sewing department i buy 3 rolls of the king size poly quilt batting every month (they think i make lots of quilts at my local wally martafraid to tell them what i really use it for im sure they would jack up the price since every one i know buys it there and none of them are making quilts either lol
I did tell the guy what I am using the batten and the floss for and he looked bewilder.
So far so good. the poly collects a lot of crud!

It does work well. However being ever objective I must admit that the batten fabric I used before labeled for aquarium use was made of a finer Polyester fiber and tighter weave. It seems to work better in filters with larger foot prints like in my FX5 where it wont clog as easily but too fine for my Mag 350 & 250 which would clog too fast with it.
Overall though the courser Poly batten I buy at WalSmart seems to balance out both polishing ability while not clogging so fast as the finer batten they sell at the LFS, so I'm sticking with the Walsmart Poly in the big bags .

The bag I bought at Walmart is blue on the top with "Poly-fil" in red.

There are two types the batten woven sheet that is one large rolled up piece great for custom cutting into fitted shapes that wont stick and fall apart and becasue of its uniform thickness givers better filtering.
Then there is the bulk fill, good for filling in spots around other media like carbon bags that don't quite fit well and you want to prevent bypass. Also works well in a wet/dry basket if not compacted.
I use allot less Poly fill then I do Poly batten, about 20 to 1.

By the way, with Christmas almost here......watch for the bags of "snow" to go on clearance. It is not treated...I contacted the manufacturer to make sure. I got mine last year after Christmas for $.50 a 20 oz bag and picked up 5 bags worth.
