Sunlight’s tank journal

Okay, a few different things to talk about today...

A couple tornadoes went through the area a couple nights ago and caused a tree to take out our internet line, so yesterday (in my day without internet) I sat in front of my tank (while it was uncleaned) and filmed a bunch of closeups of different microfauna and such, as well as up-close shots of Reggie and other things.

I also got some pictures of my tank :)

And finally I found this little guy, can anyone ID him for me? His shell is suuuper pretty. Dark brown with light caramel colored spots

You made some great macro shots like from the hydras, are you using a special lens for that?
Thank you! And nope, I used my moms iPhone 10 that has 2 cameras on the front, I just zoomed it in all the way. I’ve found that to be the best camera in the house (vs my iPhone 6 and my brothers Samsung that is supposed to have a better camera than iPhone). I’m going to buy one this summer before I head off to college so that I can keep videoing with that quality of camera (plus I still only have the iPhone 6 and it’s starting to give out).

Your snail is a bladder snail. They can breed super super fast, but will usually mellow out after some time once the population matches the food supply

Good news, your planaria is a flatworm. Rounded front rather than a triangle. So a harmless one.

I really should get a floating log... i gotta wonder how my sparkling gouramis would like it lol

I had no clue bladder snails were this gorgeous. The picture doesn’t do it any justice at all. They’re very welcome to breed all they want in my tank, this one has already done some damage to the diatoms lol. How big do they get?

Oh cool! Just a plain flatworm. I thought I could see a triangle head so I assumed planaria but I wasn’t wearing my glasses so ?

My betta adores his log and sleeps in it every night. The nerite will go in it sometimes (as you can see from the pictures) and I even find Eddie in it on rare occasion. It’s easy to grow cool algae (BBA for the most part) on it cause it’s inert and very close to the light. You could always try it with the sparkling gouramis and then give it to either of your bettas if need be :)

Your snail is close to as big as they get, but ive had a few grow to nickel size. Most maybe dime sized. Neat little snails, ive had a few show up with white bodies and gold shells. They can be beneficial to a tank. I find they add to the natural look, though i prefer my ramshorn snails. Some people dont like them because they are an "eyesore". But if you like them, then theyre not an eyesore.

My only complaint with bladder snails is that they multiply inside my filters and the poor things get mulched up in the impeller :(

Those poor snails!! Holy cow!! And I don’t mind them as long as they don’t demolish any sort of setup I have going like my mysteries did. They’d dig underneath wood and then pop up and everything would be displaced. And they’d bulldoze plants and uproot everything.
