Some say it's aquarium safe but what about you?

I want to attach a piece of driftwood directly to the bottom of my fish tank. I think it's a plastic fish tank.

Or is that even a safe idea?

Is super glue safe for aquarium use? If so, which kind?

Gel type super glue can work well on aquarium materials. It's used to glue coral frags to the cement or ceramic pedestals. Planted tank people use it to glue rhizomes to wood or rock.

The question for you is, is there enough surface on the wood to actually glue it to the bottom? If not, a fish might dislodge it. Or gravel vacuuming.
 
are you trying to make it so the wood stays submerged?

i wouldn't glue the wood to the bottom of the tank. what if you want to re-arrange things or have new plans for the tank down the road? superglue is a bugger to get off, and any solvents that would make that possible are most likely harmful to fish, or could damage the plastic of the tank.

just place/tie a large rock or two strategically on the wood to keep it down while it water logs. or water log the wood in a bucket before you put it in the tank - could take a while so be patient! :)

on a side note, superglue is perfectly safe for use in aquariums. i've used the normal glue (not the gel) to adhere java ferns and anubias to rocks and driftwood. just make sure the glue is set/dry completely before you put the item back in the tank. when applying the glue, if the item you are gluing is wet, blot it with a towel first to get most of the water off/out.
 
Yeah, super gluing it to the bottom of the tank might be over kill. I'll buy a clay pot dish and super glue it to that.

I AM smarter than the driftwood ... sometimes.

I use super glue everyday in my work and it is safe for aquarium use once it is cured. As a bit of trivia, one of it's original uses was as a means to close battle wounds until the soldier could be taken to a feild hospital. I use it to seal cuts quite often.
 
Added trivia.
A few days after getting two staples in my scalp I read how the Chinese fix small scalp wounds. They twist a couple of the hairs around the wound together, drawing it closed, and add some super glue. It lasts through careful washings, the several days needed for the scalp to heal.
Then I had to have the staples taken out. OUCH! I'd have much preferred the glue.
 
Staples, ouch! The glue is painless but I made the mistake of using the fixing agent on a cut I had just glued. That was pretty painful, although it is short lived. Turns out that the curing spray causes the glue to all set up instantly which creates alot of heat essentially burning my cut from the inside. Fortunately it only lasts a few seconds. Won't make that mistake again.

My job is the greatest, I get paid to play with superglue and toothpicks and I have a complete cnc machine shop and electronics factory at my disposal. I could make some killer DIY projects, I just need some ideas.:dance:
