Swimming Pool -> Koi Pond?

lol, well my parents are old (i guess not old old, but in their 50's) so getting hot chicks in bikini's is not the agenda. Plus to keep a pool sanitary actually takes a good bit of work and (at least for my parents) they wont get nearly as much enjoyment out of swimming in the pool twice a year and doing all the maintenance than having a gorgeous pond with fish in it to savor all year long.

Well you gotta clean a pond out dont ya? Backwash the sand filter, have the polaris clean the bottom of the pool. peice of cake! Now what about you, no chicks in ur life yet? Man if I had a pool be parties every weekend, id do all the pools maintenance!

lol! I am a chick :P and no hot guys around the pool either (besides the bf i suppose) but that would be an hour drive....
meh, dad's a funny guy, he'd much rather spend time caring for a pond than a pool.

Everybody on here that are confused why you would turn a pool into a pond is crazy lmao! I would turn my above ground pool into a pond in a second! I go to other peoples pools, forget mine! haha But theres no way I could afford that right now, and talk my parents into it lol!

For the plants... instead of baskets, what about a large-size planter in the middle of the floor?

Basicially, take lousybreed's pond, fill it with dirt, sink it to the bottom. Fill that with plants, it stays self-contained, and the rest of the floor is clear.

It'd probably only work in the shallow end, though.

Are there any new developments here? I'm from the Marine section, but I'm going to be doing this very thing. Part of a large backyard redesign with a deck over the pool, Japanese Tea Garden type... The pool is a useless feature as an actual pool. Throwing money away every month for a big wet spot.

From what I've figured out at this point, with vague knowledge of it all, I have some initial thoughts of what can be done...

This is a 16 x 36, 22,000 gallon SEE-MINT pond. :D Actually, apparently, it's gunite which I have never heard of until just now. 3' shallow, 9' deep, pump house holds a 1 and 1/2 HP pump, timer, 60 square foot diatomaceous filter. Looks like it's running through 1 1/2" pvc. We're also going to add a waterfall to the shallow end. The heater in the pump house is old and will be pitched and something else can be plumbed into that if necessary. Don't know what - another filter, maybe a DIY? And since it's a pond on a relatively large scale, the chlorine should evaporate off and dissipate with small, more frequent top offs, shouldn't it? A carbon filter canister could be plumbed into the line that fills the pool if necessary.

Definitely want to do this economically, too. From what I've read so far, it looks like I'm pretty much there now, just change the filter media, adapt the waterfall for additional filter real estate... Have I missed anything crucial?

Any and all helpful input appreciated!

Debbie
