Swimming Pool -> Koi Pond?

So my parents have a swimming pool in their backyard (they bought the house partly due to me and my sister really really really wanting a pool in our back yard...) and now that neither of us lives at home any more, it's not used it much, but my dad still does maintenance on it.

I sort of jokingly said something about converting it to a koi pond when my mom complained about having to keep it going the other day, and she semi-jumped on the idea.

So the question is... how feasible is this? How much maintenance would it require (more? less? than a pool)? Is there a way to set it up so that it would require relatively low maintenance (having the right fish/plant balance perhaps)? Any other concerns? Obviously it'd take effort, and it'd probably be a relatively long-term project, but it doesn't hurt anything to even briefly consider it (my dad may decide it's easier to keep it a swimming pool :P)

They live near San Jose, CA, so fairly temperate climate year-round. For the summer, it does get shade through the later part of the afternoon, and it tends not to warm up much til noonish (if I recall, I never wanted to go swimming in the morning because it was too cold for me). I don't know its capacity, but it's a good-sized kidney-shaped pool with sloping sides, about 3 feet deep at the shallow end, probably 7-9 feet at the deepest point (my dad made measurements at one point to estimate its volume, but I have no idea if he still has that anywhere still...).

you'd have to getv a pond filter that matches the size of the pool but other than that it has been done succesfully before, many times. you may also want the pool to be somewhat shadded so you'd either have to put itin indirect sunlight or add some lillies for shade for the koi.

Any good resources I could look at? Either I'm not good at figuring out the search terms, or I'm just not patient enough to read through all the hits, since I didn't see anything useful off either google, yahoo, or a search of this forum...

think of it as building a pond with one of those tub things,except most of the dirty work is done...no hole to dig...no linner to install...just change the filter ...do some landscaping ,and enjoy

i heard that pool liners are toxic to fish.

There are liners made for ponds, they are not toxic.

As for websites, www.aquascape.com this is the only supplier my husbands old boss would use, and their produces are very very good. I have a book the guy who started aquascape wrote to help his companies suppliers train their emplyoee's it is very cool with all sorts of pictures of the guys first pond when he was like 13 and so on up to 2004.

Thats sounds cool! I dont think though that pond liners are harmful to fish.

First of all, you'll have to build a filter, as store-bought filters are really poor quality and need maintenence every couple days.

However, before I can recommend a DIY filter plan, I'll need a general estimate of the pool size.

Do you know the length and width?
