Switching from Reef Crystal

I was going to stop using Reef Crystal because i have heard some bad things about it consistence, i have not had any problems really but i don’t really want to risk it i have a good amount of money invested in the tank and don’t want to see it crash because of the salt.

Well i was thinking of switching to Tropic Marin Pro. I was just wondering if anyone uses it, what they think about it or if there is a better salt out there I should use
 
Never heard a bad thing about TM other than the price. Great salt... just expensive. I never used it myself because of the price. The salt that I "swear by" is Ocean Pure Pro. It is acutally a cheap salt, cheaper than ReefCrystals but harder to find. I have always had fantastic luck and parameters with that salt. I have gone through about 12 buckets of it since December. My LFS was out last time I needed salt though and Dr Fosters was running a sale so against my better judgement I bought 400G worth of Reef Crystals and have been regretting it with every water change even though I know I can boost the things it is deficient in like Mg and Alk. Just extra work I never had to do with Ocean Pure Pro (there is a regular and Pro version, just like Instant Ocean/Reef Crystals)
 
Yeah Ace your other thread got me thinking about switching more then i was before the price of the TM was kind of holding me back, but with 10-15gal on my 100gal water changes weekly it is not that much money in the grand skeem of things.
 
i m a virgin in SW , but i heard bout tetra new marine salt , and read good reviews on it on net , and i bought some , didn t use it yet , but from reviews i think it s good product w good price ,so far that i just mix it i like it more than instant ocean , more clear look and better and quicker soliving ... just say u may wanna check it out ;)
 
Very doubtful. It is always recommended to try and mix the 2 salts together before just switching 100% from one salt to another in a waterchange.. but I think that advice is just out of abundance of caution vs any major real world issues documented. I know I have never heard of anyone having issues switching salt mixes as long as they test the mix before putting in your tank to make sure all the parameters are good.
 
I was told to mix the new salt with the reef crystal a little at first then increasing the amount with each water change until it is all the new salt.
 
I use Red Sea pro. It has a higher calcium rate at 450, so I don't need to add as much calcium when dosing my two part.
I have been very happy with this salt. When I was using the IO I had too dose much more calcium to keep my levels up.
I would perfer to use TM, but it is very expensive.
My LFS generally sells buckets of Red Sea for around 55.00.
 
I don't see any reason to mix the salts together when switching from one to another. If you're changing 10 - 15% of the water during a water change, that's enough of a gentle change to prevent any sort of shock to the tank's inhabitants, if there's really even a chance of there being one.

I ocassionally use different salt mixes for water changes without any problems -- IO, RC, Oceanic.
