Hi All,

I have a small synodontis catfish that I've had now for about 3 months. Up until last night he always stayed in his little cave and never really ventured out to far from it. Last night though, he was all over the place swimming like he was drunk. He was flipping upside down swimming in tight circles from the top of the tank to the bottom bumping into the glass and driftwood. This was all in slow motion too with many breaks. I was a little concerned this might be his swim of death, but i'm not sure because really this is the first time I ever saw him out of his cave. LOL. Just wondering if this is "normal" behavior for them... maybe he is just getting a little more adventurous since hes a little bigger or if i have a real problem. if so, is their anything I can do? I couldn't find him this morning but that normal in my tank its pretty heavily planted. Thoughts.... I wish I would have though to take some video.

swimming upside down is normal for them. synodontis are "upside down catfish". solitary is normal with only one, definitely. afaik they do better in groups. coming out and banging into everything both suggest possible issues.

I have a syno petricola and that sounds like odd behavior. I never see mine until feeding time, and then he quickly hoovers the bottom, running over anything in his way.

Same here until last night. I always drop an algae wafer right by his cave that he shares with a few kuhli loaches. I really can't figure out why he was swimming like that. Even if he was about to pass... why now would he venture out of his cave? doesn't make sense to me.

Look on the bright side, at least hes not drunk driving
