OK - I've only had this Dwarf Gourami (powder blue) for 6 hours ... he keeps hanging out with his tail down by the gravel and his head up - perpendicular. Is this normal for a fish to just float this way?? When he swims he is normal - horizontal.

Thanks!

they do sometimes, but not for long.
where did you get your gourami? i have noticed that the ones at petsmart arent the best quality, and are not very active. if you got your gourami from a major chain an dit keeps looking sickly and if it does die, return it, and use the money to buy one from a local owned pet suppy, as they usually have good quality dwarf gouramis

is that normal for gouramis? i've never had them, but it sounds like a swimbladder problem to me. my loach had a swimbladder infection, and could only stay horizontal when he moved actively, otherwise his tail would float up and he would end nose-down in the gravel.

I did get him at petsmart. He really is just staying in that position. Shoot did I get a sick guy!?!?!?

If he stays like that, should I return him?

all of the petsmarts get their fish from the same areas (the fish farms in Aisa), and i had one that did this, and he eventually developed a gray fuzz areound him and i had to bring him back. i would if i were you and go to a local person owned pet suppy for a new one

Should I take him out tonight? Not sure what I would do with him since I have no other tanks .... I do have a bucket.

Help

I'd say if you can return him, the sooner the better. I don't think swimbladder infections are contagious, so I'd think it would be safe to leave him in the tank until you can get back to Petsmart. It's good that store has the 14-day guarantee, it's saved me from aggression problems, but I've never had to return a fish because it was sick :(

Someone else mentioned that since he was not floating like this at the petstore, maybe he is just reacting to stress.

I'll leave him and see how he is doing in the morning.
