Taking action thanks to my previous thread "Vodka Dosing"

Kay-bee, thanks for those test results. Im actually surprised by the results. I have a extremely fine mesh strainer that a run all my frozen foods through. I thorough wash before i put in the tank. I try to keep the frozen foods to a minimal.

Davocean,

So i understand about removing the mechanical media and sponges and such. You mention to remove media and bio in addition?? are you meaning all of my biological media such as ehfisubstrat pro???? What is going to remove the ammonia and nitrite??? I have some good sized fish that need to eat lol. Would my live rock and sand and refugium sand really be enough to remove my ammonia and nitrite?

Yes, all of those would be sufficient for your tank. I would recommend that you remove the biomedia slowly, however, since you've been using it the entire time.

Yes, remove all, bio's too, but again, slowly so you don't shock anything.
So pull a handfull out 1-2 times a week or so.
Live rock is your biggest piece of filtration in reef, and sand has benefits too.
There never should be any NITRITES or amo ever, except at cycle, or something is very wrong.
NITRATES are acceptable at a certain level, and in FOWLR is less critical, and this is why I personally would not risk vodka dose in a FO.
There should be enough beneficial bacteria in LR to break down wastes.
I'm going to keep this short, but nutshell, a DSB(deep sand bed) of 4-6" has denitrification benefits, something to consider, especially FO(sps peeps go extremely high flow, usually bare bottom)
I bet after pulling all mechanical media, sponges, etc, and 1-2 WC's later your trates will be cut in half.
RO/DI WC's and top off, rinse mysis(something I should be doing too but don't) and your system will be happenin!

LOL, Amp just beat me to it!

Had some guy do Vodka dosing at Reeffrontiers site.... i asked why vodka dose somewhere maybe here or there dunno.. told me it speeds up the growth of the beneficial bacteria...allowing one to feed more since the bio part of the tank is on a boost.

Basically the dosing was to help one to increase feeding more since the bacteria would be able to keep up with the food break down load...... The only thing he warned me about was don't do dosing on a tank that isn't in pristine condition to start. Never elaborated why.

He had a Reef Tank....

So what are you up to in this experiment?

SO what ive understood from multiple sources is that the vodka will produce more bacteria. Then in turn the bacteria will break down crap?? and gets picked up by the skimmer before it can get turned into phosphate or nitrate?? thats what im trying to find out?? does it work???/

Thanks amp and davocean. I am willing to give this a shot. I removed the sponges a couple days ago. I am going to start slowly and remove the bio media a little at a time.

Well from what I understand.... Nitrate produced after one bacteria is done...the bacteria that survives in low to nil oxygen (center of rocks) breaks down nitrate.... so if you boost these guys growth rates...means you can basically increase bio load threshold for that display.

we all try to keep water clean while keeping things fed as much as we can with our tanks... I think Vodka dosers in Reef tanks just want to speed up coral growth....to do that they need to feed more often...without causing water to go south fast...increasing water change frequency to avoid other headaches.

Good luck with that...I was considering it but after a very long time with no algae problems...No cyano problems...I think I will leave my tank a lone... =) Vodka dosing sounds risky.
