Dave's as in Dave's rare fish?
From what I've read they will eat fry but are not a danger to larger fish. I even saw a tank where a 2 smaller eels were kept with shellies without a problem. They aren't aggressive. I think the hard part is making sure they get food.

my cyps ignore pellet foods. so i think some carnivore waffers would get the job done. what is the cheapest eel availiable that will work and not get too big. because i sure arnt paying $80 for a eel
Unless you have at least a 75 even an elipsifer will grow too large. Plagiostoma are one of the smallest species, and don't hide or bury themselves in the sand like most. I've only seen one seller listing them on aquabid for many months, and his price for one is higher than I paid for both of mine (excluding shipping) which is the main reason I never replaced my pair. I have also kept peacock eels and even a tiretrack over the years. After my experiences with them, and doing plenty of research, I chose the plagiostoma even though it was the most expensive even then. I never regretted spending the $$, but just can't quite see paying twice the price now.
I really appreciate you adding your experiences. It does sound like plagiostoma is the one for me. Was it difficult to get them eating?
At the price I'm seeing now it will be a while until I can afford one. In the meantime I would like to be well informed.

yea, daves as in daves fish, its about 2 hours from my house, things are a little overpriced, but its the only way to see some species in person. i suppose when you compare his prices to ordering fish online, his is cheaper due to there not being shipping, but still....

Why are all the good fish places so far from my house? I would trust Dave's rare fish when it came to getting one of these guys. I could most likely justify it by getting some of his F1 mbuna
That's not true. Fire eels get much larger and like different water parameters. I'm talking about eels that are from Lake Tanganyika.
I fed my pair frozen bloodworms as their main diet, occaisonally frozen brine or mysis shrimp. Ironically, I got a trio of sailfin mollies to help establish the tank before I even got the first eel. I figured the molly fry would be great live food, but even the smallest newborn molly fry were left untouched. I eventually moved them into a 55, and finally back to the lfs after I got sick and tired of giving away juvie sailfins before they started breeding too.
When I found the first clutch of eggs, I started a 10 gallon cherry shrimp tank. I thought that baby cherry shrimp would be good live food for plagiostoma fry (assuming I'd find a male, and they'd spawn successfully.) I did sell quite a few cherry shrimp, but never saw a single plagiostoma fry.
It shouldn't be too difficult to get one to accept NLS pellets, I spoiled mine because they were in their own tank. I didn't have to worry about mbuna getting too much protein, or competing for food with the eel/s.

I think if I got one I would start it in a smaller tank for a little while. I have a 20 long right now with some tangs in it. That way I could have better control over what he was eating. I do feed my mbuna NLS now and it's good to know an eel could switch over.
