Tank Decor - Deer Antlers-

If antlers could be used it would be sweet. I've looked for a long time for driftwood that was branchy, had a lot of them but not scraggly. Antlers fit the bill. They are branchy but organized. I think it would look awesome.

That is where the idea came from, I was at my brother's house and saw a rack he had in the garage, and I started wondering how it would look in my tank with a bunch of plants surrounding it. I bet it would look pretty good. Honestly, my goal would be that it look more like driftwood than antlers, but I still want to give it a shot. now if I can only convince him to give them to me. lol --not gonna happen, I already asked--

Has anyone actually tried this with any success? I saw in a different forum that distilling antlers is a method to make ammonia, which would mean it would NOT be safe for aquariums. I am still researching that because I am not completely sure of the source.

Interesting. I think that if you sealed it though it would become basically inert. The sealant would prevent it from contacting anything that would react with it chemically, thus no ammonia formation.

Do they make an epoxy spray or some kind of paint-on stuff like lacquer? Isn't it weird that epoxy is aquarium-safe, when it smells so toxic? Same with super glue (active ingredient cyanoacrylate), it smells like h*ll, but it's safe even to use in cuts, so under our skin, to some degree.

I would probably coat the antlers in paraffin wax, its safe for everything, and I would think the paraffin would make them impermeable, and thus safe for an aquarium.

thanks, that was pretty helpful! I am not sure if I'm gonna do it now after seeing what it looks like. Seems kinda dangerous for the fish.

What about a clear acrylic artists medium? Its very similar to acrylic paint, but clear. Modge Podge? Just throwing ideas out....

I read that post on MFK and signed up just to look at the pics, but you have to have at least 5 posts to look at pics. I don't have any reason to post there. All of my fishies are small.

I went ahead and posted 5 little posts here and there, and it let me see them. I guess in my mind, itwas going to look a lot different. Maybe if there were two pieces instead of one little one, it would look better. I am not sure I like the color of it either, it was really white and I wanted a darker look. I should probably bite the bullet, and go with the mainstream driftwood. Its just hard to find a piece that looks like I want it to. Maybe I'm too picky! lol
