i recently bought a biorb fish tank for someone but in less than a month we emptied it 3 times. when we put his fish in the water went greeny and stank, then the water went brown with horrible sludge at the bottom .its clear now but he only has 1 fish in it.the other 3 fish are in a smaller tank, but its not really suitable,1 fish has died so far.any thoughts?

Ok, wow.... I have had too many shots of captain to completely answer this question so what I will tell you is that...

#1- The tank is probably not cycled. Click on search at the top of the page and search for cycle. You will understand what I'm talking about.

#2-You should do waterchanges on your tank weekly.
#3- What fish are in there? If they are goldfish, your tank is overstocked.
#4- Is it in front of a window? Is the light left on for very long periods of time? If so, this could be algae.
#5- The brown sludge was likely a mixture of food and poop. This will not occur if a gravel vac is used weekly, the tank isn't overfed, and the fish aren't producing more waste than can be cleaned up during weekly waterchanges.
#6- You should not clean out the entire tank at once. This will cause you to lose the bacteria needed for a cycled tank.

If you search for cycle and do some research, you will find all the answers you need. They are here...I promise :)

:iagree:

Thanks for the help, and thanks bob for moving my message.the fish are gold tipped orandas and black and gold orandas, only 1 gold tipped in the tank at the minute.

How big is the tank, gallon-wise? It sounds as if it's pretty small, so I wouldn't keep that oranda in there... I can give some stocking suggestions after I know the size, but first you'd have to cycle the tank.

^ yeah...I think the biggest is a 60 litre...possible 80 ?

especially when filled to capacity the surface area for gaseous exchange is really confined.

Its a 60 litre biorb, its staying clear with one fish in it .but theres three other fish waiting to go in it.
