Ive been looking around for a new bigger tank and I have found some guys put pvc bottoms in the bottoms of some of their tanks.Is there an advantage to this?How does silicone bond to pvc?ive never seen a tank with pvc as the bottom pane thats why Im asking....thanks guys
 
yeah me too! A.G.E makes tanks with PVC bottoms..Their stuff seems real nice!Check their website
 
It probably is not silicone bonded

Probably solvent welded to acrylic sides.

The advantage would be on the manufacturers end as PVC is much cheaper than cast acrylic and I would say that 99.9% of the people don't care if they can see thru the bottom of the tank.
 
these tanks dont have acrylic sides though,I find it really interesting that these guys use PVC bottoms.I kinda like the all glass method myself,I wonder if anyone on AC have one of these tanks?
 
I have seen someone is Los Angeles making these types of tanks and the conclusion from the local reefers is they suck. They last about a year and then start having problems at the seams where the acrylic meets the glass. This was in '08 and beginning of 09 I read about them so maybe these people have the bugs worked out of the sealing process.. still not something I am willing to take a chance on.
 
yeah...to right,I really dont think i could trust the seams aswell,gave it some thought so now Im waiting for Miracles in Canada to email a quote for a custom 225,72x30x24 all four sides starfire glass for 360 degree viewing!Oh yeah...no PVC bottom.Hope they have good prices!
 
4 sides starphire? Wow, that is going to be pricey.

Pro's of starphire, clearer glass.
Con's of starphire, more expensive and scratches much easier than regular glass.

My front panel is starphire, and if I had to do it over again I wouldn't waste the $ on it. It was one of those LFS talked me into it types of things. It depends on the thickness of your glass though.. less than 3/4" thick you are hard pressed to really see much of a difference. When you get to 1" thick then it starts to make a difference in clarity.
