Hi

My aquarium water has been yellow/brown for years and years (i think about 10years in total) and it still won't go away!

Can someone please tell me what im doing wrong? I think its tannin but now after all this time im not sure...

-Ive had the same piece of bog wood in there for round 7 years which i soaked when i first bought it (untill the water was clear in the bucket) and again last year (nothing much leached out).

-The tank gets a gravel vacum and change of approx 40% of the water each week.

-There are 2 filters running, one small small one fill with just carbon and the other with ceramic tubes, sponge, carbon and amminia rid.

-And ive got a weather loach and a blue acara in the tank.

Why won't the water go nice and colourless like all your lovely tank pictures?

Do you use carbon in your filter? Its supposed to be able to pull tannins right out of the water. What kind of wood is this "bog wood" you have? Was it something you found in a river, or did you get it from a fish store?

Tannins won't really harm the fish. Though activated carbon and numerous water changes can clear up the tannic acids leached, the wood will continue leaching tannins for several years.

gatotsu77 -Yes i do use carbon in both filters and the wood i have was aquarium store bought

bk828- Thank you for the tip ill try and find it, do you know if it works well?

Lupin- I know it wont harm the fish but it still looks ugly lol, i use carbon and i change the water every week

the one in the small filter ive been changing every 2 weeks the carbon in the large filter gets changed every 3 months i think (i know not good, but even when i put in fresh carbon i never see any change in water colouration)

lol lupin dont you think there would be quiet alot of water changes and carbon changes within those 10yrs he had the wood?! :silly: you just lost one of your + from the A++++ admin scale..

and i personally do not know how effective it is but alot of people been suggesting it to me and to others. I might try it myself and just use it instead of carbon since it lasts for around 2 months and can be recharged, though if you do buy one it would be suggested you look online instead of local stores, my local store is charging double of what its worth online. Try it out 100ml bag can be found for around $7

Oh well..Learn to love tannins, Bk.;) I just don't get why yellow water due to tannic acids would be unsightly to most people.:grinyes:

I agree... I personally like the coloration my driftwood leaches into the tank. I think it makes it look more natural and subdued. My wife on the other hand hates it.

Good thing it's my tank and not hers! :grinyes:
