Tapping on the glass

my 2 cents..

i tap on the glass as I pass my tanks....usually to stir up the fish... I know they see me coming and all move towards the glass already....my tapping is in my way saying HOLA!!!

I have not noticed any stressed behavior.. they jump back and then move forward again.. my babies... just me saying HI!!!

some of the don't even move any more...so.. over time they do get used to it... ESPECIALLY my OSCARS!!!

and I do it because I have kids...they DO NOT UNDERSTAND ... "DO NOT TAP ON THE GLASS!!!!!"""" so I condition the fish instead!!

I also don't tap on the glass and never will. My fish know the open lid trick. So each time i open the lid they shoot to the surface of the water expecting some food.

alright. time for a more literal explanation.

tapping on the tank sends a small (big to the fish) shockwave thru the water. imagine having a HUGE subwoofer in your house, and having that subwoofer pound at random intervals, so loud and hard that you felt it in your chest and your head.

imagine not knowing that subwoofer was there, or why, only that it scared the tar out of you every time it happened.. not to mention gave you a headache because it was THAT loud.

My fish greet me if I'm anywhere near the tank. I don't think I've ever tapped it.

Ok, buy my quick count, 13 people tap, 20 don't. I believe if that LITTLE tap is bad for the fish, how the heck do you do your maintainence? Gravel vacs make a awful noise. Plus all the other "strange" noises once a week or so. Just thinking aloud.

Agreed...the airstone makes noise, the airbubbles that reach the top and burst make noise, filter overflow makes noise, some peoples heater clicks thats noise, theres just plenty of things that people arnt paying attention to and yet say, tapping on glass is stressful for the fish. Tapping repeatedly yes maybe a problem, but a little tap here and there wont hurt anything but maybe your finger getting a sprain..

well put.. ditto

I just don't like people touching my glass period hehe. Kind of an OCD or something I clean my glass alot. I like having as clear and unobstructed of a view as I can get into what is going on in my tank.
