Tell me how you cat-proof your fishtank!

simple and cheap...affix some small bubblewrap to the top. the crinkly bubbles and occasional pop will be sure to deter the cat.

weird.. we have 7 cats..while they like to watch the tanks on occassion.. they don't seem to be all that interested in them. we even have cat perches so they can peer into the tanks but for the most part..they are not interested.
the 2 ragdoll cats will usually help me with tank maintenance.

I talk to our cats like they are little people..believe it or not..they do understand..and cats are trainable.

I have six cats and only the younger ones seem interested, however, I have Eclipse hoods so there's no way for them to get it in.
Since cats generally hate water, you may have already accomplished your goal. The dunking may be enough to deter him.

And cats are definitely trainable but the biggest mistake people make is trying to train them like a dog. Cats are pleasure driven creatures so, as others have said, you need to make it unpleasant for him to get up there and reward him with something pleasurable (food, attention) when he behaves.
If you can, ignore him when he gets near the tank. Even negative attention is still attention and if he knows he'll get attention, that will reinforce the behavior

you don't have any ragdolls, do you?
lol

I have one that loves water..he will play in the shower if you have it running.
he crawls up when it's bath time and steps in..and when there is no bath ..he plays with toilet water...
LOL

he's weird.cute..but weird..lol

hmm so water loving is a ragdoll thing u say....i always wondered what my cat had in her...lets just say..the first time she jumped in the shower with my new bf he was a bit freaked out...lmao :)

maybe try hiding around the corner or behind a chair with a spray bottle? make it so kitty is allowed to look but not touch. if you stay hidden they will associate the spray with the tank and not with you. then again this is all "so i heard". i got blessed with a cat who doesn't realize i have fish (even when sitting on the desk with the tank) and who runs away from my pet rats...

you could also try getting some of the Sticky Paws tape. They don't like the feeling and it might keep the kitty from getting too close/on the tank.

I have 6 of the beasties and have only had this happen once. Once was enough. Cat was soaked and since then has left the tank alone. Using the tank as a water bowl on the other hand....

HOB filters in my house are seen as a cat waterfountain.

my guess is that he will NOT be doing that again.

most cats dont jump into water a second time.

He's not a ragdoll, but he spends a lot of time playing in the kitchen sink, in the shower and in the dog's water dish. Doesn't seem to be aware of the Cats-Don't-Like-Water rule.
