When I bought my 2 gal, there was a little sample of Tetra food and water conditioner. I recently went to Petsmart to buy another bottle of the water conditioner and I saw a product called Tetra Easy Balance. I read about it online; apparently it reduces water changes... for up to six months! I bought some becuase in those gastly 2 gals water changes happen constantly, but does it even work? And should I wait for the nintrogen cycle to finish before adding some?

I'm gonna say that it doesn't work. Water changes do so much more then just change the water. They reduce the nitrates that build up in your tank as well as a lot of other nasty stuff we don't measure for but build up as well. The water changes also replenish trace minerals in the water our fish and plants need to survive. You should still do weekly water changes of 25% but a 50% water change in a 2 gallon once a week shouldn't be hard either. Before I bought my Python for water changes I used to use an old 1gallon milk jug to measure how much water I took out.

Ok, after reading about the product on their site it sounds like it may aid in the cycling process but most often products that claim to do that don't live up to the hype. The best thing you can do is be patient and let the cycle happen. But, the other claims I can't substantiate. The absolute best thing you can do for your fish is give them the best and cleanest water you can. If you have chlorine and chloramine in your tap water then you should also treat it with a water conditioner such as Prime so as not to kill all the bacteria you are building up.

I would take it back. Water changes in a 2gal shouldnt take more than a minute to do. Consider water changes as the best water filtration you can give your fish, and they're just about free as well.

Hmm... I would never stop doing water changes for 6 months. The water would be discusting! Changes are kinda hard in my 2 gal hex because of the stupid UGF...

Apparently it reduces nitrates (or was it nitrites? ;)) as well as adds vitamins. I'd just do water changes once every two weeks maybe.... :|

Good point. *feels pretty stupid*
I think I'll still try it. I don't live near Petsmart so I can't exactly return it.
Because of my stupid UGF I have to get out uneaten food...
Hopign the tank will hurry up and cycle though! ;)
