The 75gal reef tank cycle has started!!!!!!!

Well it looks like we are not getting any fish today. :O( I never thought it would be so hard to get some clowns and a Yellow watchmen. I know that everyone says to be patient but they are very common around here and you see them at every store but when we want them the LFS that she has a credit to has none. :O( Maybe something is telling us to wait for some reason. Now I don't really believe in such things but Geze. Well maybe tomorrow they will get the shipment in and we can take a ride.

It's funny cause we got the Bio-Cube 8 because Ashlee's fish are in the other one but by the time we get the first fish for the 75 Her fish are going to be done in the 12 gal.

We didn't getting the fish today either. The shipment never came in. I have no idea when we can get out there next week so it looks like next week end.

I guess I can tell you guys what has been going on in the 75gal. Last week after I did a water change we had gotten this snail from my girl friends tank and put him in the 75. the reason we took him was that we had never seen one of those snails for sale anywhere around here and it was a great clearer. The thing about this is that they are very had to get off what ever it was on. We brought it here in a glass jar and it was stuck to the inside and wouldn't come off. We figured we could just put the whole jar and snail in the tank and let it just crawl off. Well it crawled around the inside and then the outside but never came off the jar. So we just left it in there and waited, and waited, ad waited some more. At this point I'm thinking he's got to be dead. It hasn't eaten in like 2 days. Now I look at it and it is pealing off the jar not sliding, pealing. I tuck the jar out and he just popped off. He was moving a bit so I set him out a rock that has some algae to see if he would stick and maybe try and eat and he never moved. Today when we got home our Emerald crab was eating the snail. Now I understand that it's just a snail but this is the second time this has happened and am wondering if I am doing something wrong or is this common. Now it's not like we don't have any snails and there all dieing. We have 2 Cerith snails that are doing fine. there all over the tank. I temp/dripped then for about a 1/2 hour. So I don't now what it is.

As far as the tank goes other wise, it's great. everything else seems to be settling in nicely. All the crabs are now moving all around the tank, even the boxer. He has found 2 little white anems and is so funny to watch. He feeds them and fluffs them and then waves them around like he doing Cotta. ( I think that is how you spell it) the shrimp are doing well I think. One of them is fat and I'm wondering if it's got eggs. They were doing what sexy shrimp do but on top of each other when we got the home and were still in the bag floating. They have really taken to the Coco worm and hang out in it crown. I'm not sure if the shrimp are feeding it, cleaning it, or stealing food from it but the worm doesn't seem to mind so I guess there not bothering it. As for are star fish, he still hasn't really come out to much yet. he did check out the whole tank one night and then went right back to he first hiding place and has not left. He does stick his arms out of the rocks and looks for food but that's it. He's a big one so he can reach far. I guess if he didn't have enough to eat where he is he would go looking. We have only lost 1 hermit and I think someone wanted he shell. We did put some shells in the tank for the hermits but I guess we need more verity for them. Our Emerald is doing good I think. He is still missing 3 of his legs but he gets every where he wants to go. He should molt soon so that will be cool to see him with all his legs. As for the Sally Light Foot he doing better as far as coming out more. He has made his way over to the other rock pile and is really ticking the rocks clean. Other then that not much has changed other then the tank reading. They have come down to almost right now.

SG 1.024
ph 8.3
Am 0
rites 0.01 maybe 0
rates 2
Cal 440
Temp 77

Well like I said there isn't that much going on with the tank but it seems to being settling in nicely.

Some of the turbos can be hard to detach but even with those I just tickle it's foot a bit with my fingernail and twist very very gently. They'll let go that way I've found. In the future if you suspect it is dead...simply smell it. You'll know, trust me you'll know. In the future make sure you match the SG during acclimation, especially with inverts.

I've had problems with my snails falling off rock and the glass...the horrible part about that is everytime this happens my hermits are right there to claim their new shell.:angryfire:

Stupid hermits..

When you get your yellow watchmen goby are you going to get a pistol shrimp also? I'm adding a pistol shrimp on Wed so if you where thinking about it I will give you some feedback. I have a yellow watchmen and haven't ever had any problems with it eating or getting picked on by other tank mates...but sometimes he'll chase my hawkfish or blue spotted watchmen away from this hole. Every night I look into my tank with a flash light and see that my yellow watchmen never sleep any where except in his rock...very cool personalities and colors. I really hope you like yours when the shipment comes in....:grinyes:

k just sat for hours and read this whole thread for i am too thinking about setting up SW in the same manner as you, but going to try it in a 30gal first. I have no experience in SW or know anywho local who does, so keep up the posts and the pics. I am going to be referring back to this surely!!!

I want to thank you for saying that but I have to tell you I have no idea what I'm doing. If it wasn't for my girl friend and this site I wouldn't even have tried this. I do have to say it is kinda cool that what I have tried and have done is getting such great things said about it. Allot of the things that I have done, I learn from this site. I have no doubt that I will by using this site for the whole time that we have a SW tank of any kind. Also if I know myself I'm sure that I will be posting it all on a thread of some sort.

Thanks agian, and good luck with your tank.

i refer to it all the time too lol thanks woodright

Thank you and you are welcome also. ^ that goes for you too! I'm looking foward to seeing your tank mature.

just last night i was searching your pages ,looking for the chart and your levels how they progressed to compare them to mine lol

I am getting a lot of stuff end of the week (when hubby gets back)i have posted .

Happy Easter!

I hope everyone had a great Easter. We had a really good day. Not much has changed with the tank all though the Test have been better. I didn't do a full run of tests but I did do Am, rites, and rates.

Am 0 and has been for about 3 weeks now.
Rites are at .01/0 for the last few days.
Rates are at around 5

Now I thought that Rates wouldn't go down, only up. They have drooped with out doing any more water changes. Dose this happen or is there something going on?

Other then that all the critters seem to be doing great. Our boxer has even been coming out allot more. He is so funny. I love the nems in his hands.

That snail is still in there. I was wondering if I should take it out? All the crabs have been picking at it but I'm not sure if I should leave it in there and let it rot while they eat it. I thought that maybe the cabs could use something different to eat. Do you think I should take the rest out?

I haven't seen the sally eat any of the snail. All the other cabs have had some but not him. Do they eat meaty food or just algae?

Our Brittle Star has not come out since we put him in really. He just sits in this cave in the rocks and sticks his arms out to find food. I wonder if hes doesn't like the tank or something. He doesn't even come out at night. How can he have enough food? I do feed the tank a bit Cyclopes or how ever you spell it, oyster eggs and some fish flakes but not allot. Could he be living off what floats by? I guess it just makes me nervous that he doesn't come out to eat. I haven't even seen what he really looks like.

Well sorry for the babbling I'm just typing what I have been thinking about.

If you would like to help clear my mind on some of these questions that would be great. Maybe I'll be able to sleep some point to night. Do it for my health.LOL I think I've had to much salt. Ha get it to much salt! OK I'll stop I know. (Head down)

<<All looking very well to me>>

<<This is correct..Your nitrates will eventually fall down to around the figure you've quoted..When they have stay at this point will no ammonia and nitrite showing a 5 or so days, then its large water change time, and your done>>

<<Yes, take it out>>

<<They are predominantly algae grazers, but will pick at carrion>>

<<Very normal for a brittle star to do this...You will find that it will extend its tentacles at feeding time and collect what it needs as it floats by>>

<<Yes, certainly, the brittle will be getting this food>>
