The Algae Battle

It seems as if I am starting to win the battle against the algae in my tank. After adding the RO/DI, it seems as if algae has been on the retreat. Normally, after a water change with my crappy DI system, algae would start to grow back in a few days, but now, I see very little on the return. My sand and rocks would start to get covered in brown and cyano algae, so it would be a pain maintenance. Its been 6 days since I did a big water change and I have yet to see the same big problem return. My tank looks a hundred times better than it used too, and hopefully it will be able to stay that way.

I noticed some small patches of algae growing in certain spots, but it is nothing that I can clean up with ease. The algae that grew on my rock was blown off with my hand and powerhead, so I netted that all out and started to see the purple on my rock again. I was considering adding a phosphate reactor as a final blow to get rid of any algae that is growing, but I am very glad that my tank is better than it has been.

Very good news superscro..

I want to get a phosphate reactor just in case, but I am not quite sure how it works.

Very easily.. I had one in my sump but is basically a acrylic cylinder with a tube going down to the bottom that then pushes water via (like a maxijet) up through the binding substance (I recommend phosban as it is an Iron Based agent and works really well) and then the water exits a tube at the top which you put back into your tank.

PhosBan has a reactor for like 35 bucks on Fosters and Smith..

Ok, i came home and noticed the red hair algae is growing back......

I am wondering if it is my salt. Here is a picture.

Well you have enough flow.. I just calculated it at 24x +.. Have you tried adjusting your powerheads to cover dead spots?

I tried to angle them to get the best possible flow throughout the tank, but there is always a spot. The algae waves around violently, so I don't know tough it is.

Have you thought about getting rid of the maxijet which does a force stream and getting another koralia 2 for the dispersed flow?
