The best speciment fish

If you are only keeping one then why are you worried about if it's peaceful? Just for your own safety ;) ? I know you said you want only one peaceful fish, but maybe you could try having a bunch of rams in there. They get very colorful and are probably one of the most peaceful cichlids you will find. But if its 1 you want, then Id say probably a Severum. One should be big enough for a 75 gallon. Hope some of this helps, and good luck.

Pretty much all cichlids require about the same amount of attention. And why do you only want one fish? You can keep more than one fish if you choose some of the smaller cichlids.

You could do with a large oscar, red devil, green terror, the list goes on.... How about if you tell us some fish you want and we can tell you more about them? Your question is very general.

Most larger cichlids are territorial, but its not like they will rip your hand off. They might nibble at you a little if the fish isn't shy, but it won't cause any pain. Maybe just a little scare if your not expecting it :-p

kjd277-Large is good. I'm planning to get a big cichlid.

phiberXoptic-I meant nice as in it looks nice. About the rams...I've read that it's a bit hard to keep them because they don't handle pH/gH swings very well.

jonathan03-I wont be keeping dwarves in the 75gal tank because I already have a dwarve tank.
I was thinking of an argantena and other fish like that.

Thanks for all your posts...keep’em coming! :)

Maybe a nice big Jack Dempsey? or if it's a challenge you want, then maybe try one of the new Electric Blue Dempsey's but I hear those guys are pretty delicate in terms of water parameters and as I can see that's not want. Maybe an Oscar, they have lots of personality.

Green Severums are spectacular fish... I'd say get five or so when they're tiny (I got mine when it was about the size of a nickel) and wait until two pair off... Sell the rest, and enjoy your mating pair. Dunno how hard they are to breed, but they become even more astonishing when in mating colours.

You could even keep some dither fish in there with them, to make the tank a bit more lively.

What sort of tank dimensions are we talkng?
How about a vieja synspilum (Red Head), beautifull colouring, Similar temperament to Oscars, would make a nice single fish if thats what you want.
