I'm going to be moving my fish from my established 20g into a new 75g. I've been thinking about the best way to do this as the only things I want from the 20g are the fish, the filter and some of the plants.

For the 75g there will be a flourite substrate, 4*65 watt PC, bogwood, rocks and lots of plants. I will be using a new Fluval 304 (or similar) and also the Fluval 204 from my 20g. So this is what I was going to do.....

Set up the 75g with the Fluval 304, add the substrate, plants and decor and then let it run for a week or so to give me time to move things around and let it settle. After I'm satisfied all is well, I'll move the fish, more plants, and filter from the 20g into the 75g. In the 20g I have

6 black skirt tetras
1 clown pleco
2 ottos
3 peppered cories
2 ghost shrimps
5 algae eating shrimps

I'll then add a HOB filter to the 20g and use it as a quarantine for additions to the 75g. I only know I'll be adding more ottos and cories to the new tank and haven't decided on anything else yet.

So does this sound like a safe plan?

Sounds like you know what you're doin'. If you do a water change on the 20, put the water in the 75 to speed things along, not that it sounds like you're in a hurry. How's about soma them glass skirts?

I've still got no idea how I'm going to stock this tank. So far....

6 black skirt tetras
1 clown plec
5 ottos
4+ peppered corys
4+ panda cories
shrimps

So, I'm looking for other peaceful mid/top water fish but they must be from South America. I'd though about a pair of rams and some other tetras. The ghost tetra looks neat so it's high on the list.

Moving the water won't do anything but import waste--don't bother. A bit of the mulm from the gravel in the 20 would be more useful, as it would import bacteria and a variety of microscopic critters that will help out.

The rams won't really be mid-water fish--they tend to hang out in the lower levels, around plants. Maybe some hatchets? Most of the mid-water fish listed for SA biotopes tend to be either very big, or very aggressive, to deal with some of the larger predators.

Well maybe I'll have to rethink here about an SA setup. Anyway my plants, shrimp and snails in my 20 are not from that part of the world. I'm a bit wary about keeping hatchets because I hear they are quite the jumper and I plan on letting some plants grow out the tank if possible.

So I'll widen my horizons a bit. As long as the fish are peaceful and compliment a fully planted tank then they will be just fine. Any ideas, bearing in mind what I already have in my 20g?

More cories IMO. I live my 4, they are far more entertaining and active than my tetras are. I get a kick out of their attempts at schooling. Its like watching little kids at a dance class :D
