The only stupid question...

Are you 100% sure it's an upside-down cat? There are other synodontis cats that look pretty similar and could get bigger and eat small tetras you put with them. Just thought I'd throw that out there

Great narrative! Thanks for the nice read. Good luck with the tank. A large school of cardinals will be quite the show.

I don't know if upside-down catfish hibernate, but other catfish do. He may have been hibernating.

P.S. I recommend making the switch to live plants. They aren't as difficult as you might think & the do a lot of fabulous natural filtration. My experience of plastic plants is that the cling to a lot of crap that makes tanks sick if you don't pull them up and clean them.

I don't know how bright your lights are, but Anubias plants are VERY easy to care for. Java is great if you have what to tether it to. My current favourite are Aponogeton Crispus_ a tall growing bulb plant that one it starts growing, I find to be neigh unstoppable and very pretty . . . if you get the aquatic plant bulb pack that most places like petsmart have now, they are the smaller bulbs.

That is probably the plant I've kept most successfully. I got one of the bulb packs at Wal-Mart and they are just hybrid Aponogetons I think-they did pretty well. I got a plant pack from somewhere online and they subbed a crispus for a sword. It came to me at about 18" tall, but grew like CRAZY and in a couple months was over 6' tall (bottom right corner of a 55, all the way to the surface, all the way to the other end of the tank and then drooping back down in to the water some). HUGE plant! Very easy to care for. I also had great luck with one of the Wal-Mart lily bulbs

I got my tiger lotus bulbs at That Fish Place in Lancaster, PA_ They have the best plant selection I've seen in any store_ And routine price breaks for multiples of the same plant.

The cool thing about the lotus bulbs is that when the plant gets big enough, you can break it off of the bulb & the bulb will eventually start to grow a new lotus.

Awesome about the 6' A Crispus_ I can't let that happen in my tank though: There is little enough surface area with shorter plants.

Good job! That is amazing that the synodontis nigriventris lived so long with no food. Upside down synos don't usually hibernate so that is very wierd. Anyway, he will probably be happy with you as the owner. :)

has moby gotten any bigger? if so he's probably not a negriventis. as stated above there's a couple sinos. they are hardy for sure, but he's a certified trooper. if he is a negriventis he will be more playful with more friends.

Also considering adding some driftwood, since upsidedown catfish enjoy hiding and try adding some floating plants for cover.
