Senior Member? Do I get a 5% disc.?
As for them changing colors. I was not aware that they would continue to do that? The two that they had were almost solidly orange with a few little brown blotchies on them. They looked very much like slightly discolored common goldfish. Is this usual for a young shubunkin? These guys were around 2-3" long including tails.
Other than buying very well bred goldfish... and sometimes even with them... goldfish other than standard common goldfish WILL almost always change colors many times through their lifetimes. They have been inbred so many times to achieve all the mutations that there are very few pure goldfish out there any longer. Remember that ALL goldfish come from the Common Goldfish and even the Common Goldfish (and Koi) were inbred to achieve their coloration. See that same Bristol Goldfish site and click on the History link to see the original goldfish, which wasn't even gold, and the history of how the various inbred mutations have happened over the past thousand years or so. If you get your goldfish from anyone other than a top-notch breeder, you can expect that you will be getting the mutts, not the champions... although there's nothing wrong with mutts. I have one bugging me to go outside right now... no, not a fish, a dog. LOL There are a few websites with breeders and/or importers where you can get a higher quality of goldfish but you can expect to pay a LOT more money for one of them... even hundreds of dollars each sometimes.
