The Truth About Fish Food (Hikari Is A Wash)

Well, since algea waffers are meant for fish that primarily eat plants, I'll take the corn meal over ground up fish left overs. If land plants aren't good for fish then we should stop feeding them all the veggies that we do. Just because other vitamins aren't listed doesn't mean they are not there. Most foods don't list every vitamin that is in it. My fish go after the wardley's more than the Hikari anyway. I really don't feel like getting into such a debate about fish food. I have bigger issues to worry about then defending a particular brand.

hmmm my clown loachs love these "topfin" wafers, and i use omega-one after compairing EVERY fishfood petsmart had and finding that the ONLY differnce between all of them was that omega one had 1% more protien than the other brands.....yup 1% but i bought it!

(my topfin wafers are mainly fish meal, then some corn stuff and the rest....but for real these wafers don't last more than 5 min in my tank! i feed about everyother day 2 wafers to 1 pleco and 3 loachs, they eat every little bit or the ghostshrimp finish it off)

Thanks, and sorry about the off topic dog food rant. Just a sore spot with me since Hills insists on adding BHA and BHT, known cancer agents, to many of their foods.

You don't have any good recommendations for decent cat food by any chance do you ?

Most of those companies listed in the WDJ List, which is what Flint River Ranch has on their site, make cats foods as well. I'd opt for any of those over store-brand foods any day.

We fed our cats Wellness, made by Old Mother Hubbard, and we often feed our dogs a canned food called Neura, also made by Old Mother Hubbard. Neura is 95% real meat, no by-products.

Heh, I didn't know there was a Whole Cat Journal as well. Wellness is apparently rated #1 by them and it's not a "hard to get" food. My LFS stocks Wellness for cats and dogs.

Petco's web site has, for cats: Natural Balance, Breeder's Choice, Eagle Pack, Old Mother Hubbard, and Wysong.

I assume you can get those in the Petco stores as well. I'd feed any of those over store stuff any day and all of those companies have been on WDJ's Top Ten list.

I prefer the Hikari Algae Wafers far more over the Wardleys...

I bought some Wardleys spirulina discs about 6 months back, I've used about 6 of them so far, the fish wont eat them (even my Scats, which generally eat everything.), they just deteriorate into a blob of green goo which sits on the bottom until I vacuum.

goldfish food has more ash in them than tropical fish food, or it might be the other wqay round- can't remember! :

same thing with hedgehogs. a staple for them is cat food, but hedgehogs have slightly different needs than a cat so the "normal" cat foods aren't very good for them. mostly full of filler. the trick was to look for the foods with little to no filler in them, which tend to be on the pricier side.

I guess the point was that the more expensive cat food is more healthy for hedgies

as far as fish food, I just feed a combination of wardley color enhancing flake food, tubiflex worms made by my LFS and algae tablets, supplemented by the occasional piece of asparagus, string beans or peas.

Here's a new discovery: Top Fin's betta pellets are likely made by HBH. The girlfriend and I sat there and read the ingredients of both to each other in unison...thus they are the exact same food, only the Top Fin is sold for less money. Looks like I just found a cheaper source for HBH Betta Bites.

I like Hikari's frozen foods (their bloodworms are excellent), but I'm not a fan of their pellet/disc offerings. Their algae wafers are terrible for herbivorous fish. HBH veggie wafers are by far the best I've tried.

I just thought we were having a friendly discussion on which wafers we prefer. It was simply my own personal experience and opinion. Last thing I want to do is "cause issues in defending a particular brand"

I use Hikari Cichlid Gold exclusively as my staple food,I love it,as do my fish.I always say,if it aint broke,don't fix it.
