The Use of Garlic in the Aquarium

Hmmmm..interesting subject...Dont really know about FW fish et cetera...But with marine fish, it bolsters the immune system and aid finiky fish to start feeding..Still yet to find any conclusive proof that garlic cures parasitic infections, like some people say...

Just my opinion of course....will be following this one... :)

This one might interest you then. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-10/sp/index.php

Yes, i have read that article many times ( know it before i even open it )..Its a very interesting read, however, does not make the subject conclusive for me to use garlic to fight parasites.

One point i would like to draw to your attention on that article is right at the end, in the summary section..

To recap, garlic's use as an appetite stimulant is questionable at best. It seemed to have a positive effect when injected into fish that were infected with a bacterium.

.....injected into the fish....now then, thats a little bit different than what the average aquarist can or would do...so...i can see this from a few different aspects...

Interesting topic. I haven't been using garlic (other than in my pasta sauce), but may start.

I thought you might have. Yes I must have over looked that right at the end. It was late lastnight when I was reading that article. I dont think it would cure parasites but it may help with the process or may even help prevent them. But this is just my opinion. I will say it's a great appetite stimulant.

My girlfriend saw me add garlic to a tank and when she asked me what I was doing I replied "seasoning my fish" :grinyes:

so, you just drop a clove in?

I have a pleco that was not eating anything except my plants...started rubbing garlic paste on cucumber...got him going on that now, and without the paste...although maybe he would have taken that anyway, but it had been a week of trying the cucumber without the garlic paste, and with the paste on he chowed straight down.

I think I'm going to use some real garlic over the Seachem Garlic Guard for some bloodworm addicted Bolivian Rams that won't eat anything else...see how the real stuff does in comparison. A little starvation, some real garlic, I'm sure they will be eating other things in no time...hopefully. :)

I always just put a clove in the blender and turn it into puree...add it then to food...
thanks, now I have something to add to my snail jello, well I already mads some, guess I'll reconstitute :)
