Things LFS employees told you that you knew weren't true

I purchased about 10 cardinal tetras for 10 dollars, simply because the lady thought they were neon tetras. Lol Then the boss came back to work eventually after coming back from Guatemala and he knows they are cardinals;his wife was a sub to help out

I was in a local pet store.. not smart or co, but another land...
Anyway, I was looking at fish in a 55 gal community display tank.
It had several Tetras, and some Danios, as well as a few dwarf gouramis, and a few small tiger barbs.

In my peripheral vision, I could see a few people talking. there was a couple, and a petstore worker. Anyway the man was carrying a 5 gallon bucket. The worker took the bucket and brought it over towards me, and politely said "excuse me", and I stepped aside. She then netted a 5"-6" Red belly Pirinah out of the bucket, and put him directly into the tank I was looking at!!

I asked her if that was a Pirinah, and she confirmed that it was. I asked her if it was a good idea to put it in that tank, and she said that it (the pirinah) would be OK. I said yeah, but it is going to eat everything else in the tank! She said, "no, I dont think it can eat them all!" I stood there dumbfounded, as she put that fish in the tank. It immediately hid behind some fake plants, as every other fish scattered to the other side of the tank, franticly looking for a giding place..

I just left.. I couldnt believe what i had seen..

She didnt even acclimate the Pirinah. these fish didn't stand a chance.

i sent my daughter to the petstore with my mom to get some moss balls cause she likes them and has her own tank with moss balls and mts in it..(i know, lol) they came back with a 2 gallon tank, 3 goldfish and had spent sixty dollars. the lady told them it would be a good idea to get more than one goldy so they would be happy in thier little tank.
i don't usually ask for advice from the pet stores. i have told them on a few occasions when their fish are sick or some other obvious problem like the filter isn't working. i did try to buy a bird that was mostly bald and the other birds were pulling it's feathers out and they told me i had to buy two birds if i wanted that one and that it was normal for their feathers to fall out like that every few months. i told them it's not normal and i just wanted to rescue that one bird but they refused because it was their policy to only sell them in pairs.
in their defence, some of the staff they hire aren't really into animals and just want the job. some are misinformed themselves and relie on out of date information that comes with their fish orders, or get confused more easily because they arent' really interested in the fish and there are so many different kinds. i think it would better of them to advise people to do research on their own than to answer every dum question for them.

Hey folks, just to make it clear, I started this thread because of what happened to me that I found amusing. I was given totally false info from LFS employees that really didn't know much about fish and was trying to wing it on his own. The tales they told were just riduculously false as to make the story funny to us hobbyists. I am enjoying alot of your comments so far. But my intention is not to ridicule or put down any of these people or the owners of the LFS. I realize that there are well-managed stores and there are badly mis-managed stores; and there are well-informed employees as well as un-informed employees in both stores. I'm sure everyone of you know where to go locally when you need certain items/fish from your experience since you know each of your LFS' strength and weaknesses. With that in mind, let the stories continue... I'm sure we can glean many more laughs from this thread.

If it's a loach, I can ID it. My LFS knows this, and they are great, responsible hobbyists who really know their fish...

But for some reason beyond me, they refuse to sell a full-grown (about 5.0") Yo-Yo loach under the right name. I can only ask them so much, as I'd love to buy it, but they are being stubborn about it. A five year old could distinguish a Yo-Yo Botia Loach from an Angelicus Botia Loach, but they are calling it the latter and slapping a $30.00 price tag on it for being so large. Ugh.

I've been meaning to rant about that to somebody.
I wish I'd slap them with photos of adult yoyo loaches with reticulated and typical yoyo patterns (although the latter changes eventually).:headshake2:

one day i was standing there waiting to get some feeders when i herd the lfs guy tell this women that this green severm they had 6-8in would be fine in her 55 gallon tank which also had tetras blleding hearts and neons know thats bad advice i ever heard

Actually bleeding hearts will work but not the neons. Neons are indeed small enough and will likely be chomped by the severum. Tank size is fine for a sev or two.

Not fish related but interesting, someone was told (at another LFS), that their dehydrated hamster needed to be misted down, because they have the ability to drink through their skin
