do you need a checker solution and a second bottle of that solution that is a set color for the drop checker with two glass bubbles??

I'm almost positive the reference solution is sealed.

It makes sense if you think about it, the liquid in the reference side is there for that reason, to compare what 30ppm Co2 with a 4dkh checker looks like.
