Well after dosing iron, and removing the thread algae from my java moss and microsword I read that I should not dose iron because it is causitive for thread algae. My substrate is flourite. dose it leach iron into the water column, or just provide root nutreints? How long will it take for the plants to use the iron I dosed. Are there other factors to thread algae, if so what should I do or not do to get rid of it.

do you dose? what's your schedule?
which tank is it?
what's your lighting setup and timing?
do you have floaters or shade providing plants for your moss?
what's your gh, ph, trates?
is there water flow in that area?
any co2?
got a picture?
do you recognize it here... http://www.theplantedtank.co.uk/algae.htm

where did you here excess iron is a cause?

it was once beleived that iron can causes. not anymore though.

nowadays its said that algae is cause by low or fluctuating co2, lack of nutrients or too much lighting... or a combination of all of it

it looks like blanket weed from the photos in the link.
, the info was from plantgeek.com
80 watts, 6700K over 36 gal and 29 gal.
12-14 hours a day
no shade or floaters for the moss or micro sword

nitrates 10 ppm in 36, had to dose nitrogen twice to help with cyanobacteria
phosphates 1ppm in 29, 0 in 36
pH 7.0 in both
usually dose on Wed, Sat seachem line excel every other day test for phosphates and nitrates to see if I need to add nitrogen, or phophorous

29 4 mos old, 36 upgraded from long established 20 gal on Dec 18-20. so both are unstable and still settling in. Both tanks heavily planted. did not dose iron yesterday. will not dose iron from now on.
I believe I need to be more consistant in dosing.

LS:

Dosing with chelated iron will help control thread algae.

Also double dosing with CSM+B will help.

i agree with jones... keep that dosing up all around. living on the borderline minimum on phosphates and nitrates can't be help matters much either.

This is off topic but:

1) I have ceased adding phosphate to my dosing regimen due to algae issues.

2) I have found that nitrates around 5ppm are more productive than the typically recommended 15 to 20.

Please note though that I have only 5ppm CO2 but with 5wpg.

I've had a bout with hair/thread algae in my 15 gallon, which uses some fluorite. My problems included low NO3 levels with too small of water changes. I upped the dosing and water change levels and it all but disappeared.
