Tiger Barbs

In my 34 gallon tank I have 4 green tiger barbs, 3 tiger barbs a dwarf gourami, and a pinapple sword tail. They all get along pretty well. The barbs chase eachother around at times and sometimes the swordtail swims lie he's schooling with the barbs, but I have yet to see any harasment of the gourami. Granted my tank has only been running for 5 months.

Is it safe to put tiger barbs with gouramis in a 40 gal tank with a red tailed black shark?

it will be fine, i have them all in my tank.

no trouble at all

I'll say it again--tigers are well-known in aquarium circles for nipping the pectoral threadfins of gouramis. Why chance it?

^Pretty much sums it up. Try at your own risk. If it works, fine. If not be prepared to move your gourami.:)

In my 100 gallon tank I have around 20 tiger barbs with plenty on plants & dont see them as a threat to their tank mates rather they are getting along fine at least so far as my tank is around 2.5 months old.
2 red gouramis
4 albino sharks

Okay, well, say i drop the gourami, would the tiger barbs be okay with my shark? If so, how many tigers could i get for my 40 g tank? Also, if this combination would be okay, what fish should i add first?

Thx for everything!

Tigers could go well with a shark as long as there are some hidden spots for the shark if it feels it's getting picked on too much. I would put in the tigers first so that the shark doesn't necessarily feel like they are intruders.

As for how many tigers...12-15 would probably be okay if you keep your tank to just tigers and the shark.

Hollow logs? Pieces of slate, staggered making little pockets or caves.

I agree with Bob on this one, but would like to add that you should make sure that the slate is not precariously perched (falling slate isn't good for fishes). Many people suggest making sure your base slate is on the bottom glass of the aquarium so that fishes can't dig underneath it. Also, siliconing together pieces of slate (with aquarium-safe silicone, natch!) comes highly recommended. Or you can simply buy pre-made caves...I like www.grottosandfins.com for those.
